Just to let you know, Apex Motorsports (in San Jose) is about the worst shop I know of in this area, dont listen to a thing they say. Their price per pound of nitrous cant be passed up though, $3.

So Dan, could you please recommend a shop or two up there? I would like to see if maybe they are priced better than the LA area. I am willing to drive to get this done, if a pro install is the way I decide to go.

and Dan and Don.... what are you guys gonna do about the 2011 smog test? don, if you get the cams, there is no way in heck you gonna pass like that, and you guys both have long tubes. You planning to take it all off? you cant take the cams out really, so maybe a tune just to pass smog with? What are you guys planning on?

 

First of all, have you talked to Adam about installing them for you?

Re: smog. I don't plan on my car being on the street in 2011. By then it will be retired to a track only race car. That's the plan anyway.

 

I have called Adam twice, and he is supposed to return my call, I guess he is really busy, so I will just be patient.I have faith that he will be the answer to my prayers.

 

I talked to Adam a couple days ago, and I know he's swamped. I guess that is the price of success.

BTW, I talked to Doug about 1/2-hour ago. He was in an airport in CA, and I was in my car, so it wasn't a long conversation. We're going to talk a little more this weekend when he has a chance. One thing he did mention to me was that since I have a blower and am building the shortblock, he recommends that I go with the "biggest and baddest" of the cams. One thing we need to verify is the valve-to-piston clearance question. He thinks that all four grinds will work with the stock pistons, but we're going to try and verify that with Comp next week.

 

I recommend AlteredSpeed in French Camp, they are a shop that have already installed cams in the new 3v motor. They work with a small shop out of the SoCal area which have been in research and development of camshaft design for a short while now. This would be your best bet since you are asking me.

Also, I dont mind taking a day or two taking my car back to stock to pass smog. Im not worried about it. Upgrading your cams is also not a sure thing to NOT PASS smog in 2011. Its all about the tune that is in the vehicle and that you dont have any OBDII readiness codes in memory. Long Tubes and a lack of cats would fail visual right away and anything else that isnt CARB approved.

does anybody know if the 2005/06 crown vic has the 3v motor? or what other cars have the 3v motor? I have a friend who works for the city fixing cop cars/fire trucks and the like, and they are mostly all fords, and I am going to see if he has the tool for the valve springs, so what other cars is it used on? if the new police interceptor crown vics have the 3v 4.6 like we do, that would be sooooo awesome becuase then i would have access to all the Ford tools...... please tell me it does. Ford's site is no help at all, and I cant find specs on the car anywhere. And I think 3v 5.4 motors still would use the same tool too, right?

 

FYI... After talking to Adam today, I have decided to pass on the new cams right now. We're going to wait and let others be the test mules on tuning with these. Maybe once more info is out in the industry in a few months we'll go for it then.

 

dan, do you have the shop manual pages to remove the front timing chain covers? and the power steering pump?
