Clunking noise
I noticed the clunk as I was driving off the dealers lot. I'm not sure of the cause. Could be clutch engagement, tranny backlash, too much slack in the driveline/diff, the traction control, or just the weird throttle lag. I have noticed that the better I match revs to gear changes, the less noise. I'm not really worried about it, as I hear no grinding. Guess time will tell.

Man am I glad you guys posted this. I just got back from being out of town and am now noticing every noise that this car makes after not driving it for a week. The best way I can relate to this is that the transmission and/or the various linkages and shafts are loose and sloppy. But if everyone else feels it, then I'm ok with it!

The clunking bothers me. I have taken to the dealer twice...they agree it is clunking but they say all of the GT's do it. If I give someone a ride, they ALWAYS ask: "What is that clunking? Is it normal?" I want it gone.
Thought I would resurrect this one. I was getting the same noise when I drove the car Thrs. night. At first, it was only going into 4th, but then I started driving it harder, and it started doing it in 3rd.
Shift to third . . . clutch out . . . CLUNK.
I was also getting a "whine" sound sometimes. Like, when I would downshift to third or fourth. I'm guessing that is the same noise that everybody else has. Just noisy syncros?
This is definitely the noisiest tranny I've heard. Shifter is notchy too, but I think some of that will go away after I have more than 12 miles on it.
I'm not going to worry about it too much, but I just don't think anything should clunk. I'm definitely going to check it out, and see if those bolts are missing.

My car does that too, especially when hot (after a lenth of time in traffic or on the highway). It then shifts like a truck. I also hear the clucth bearing (clanking noise that goes away when I press on the clutch pedal). The tranny is great when cold. It's funny, my car is at the dealership NOW for this problem, the missing bolts on the transmission (2 weeks for parts to come in) and the gas tank TSB ...
I've gotten MUCH better at shifting this car, so I almost never get the noise now. Only when I mess up do I get any noise. Downshifting is still a bit rough though.
I had somebody rock the car while I listened underneath. The noise I hear is coming from the trans. I guess it's just another quirk of the Tremec.
Oh, and my car has the bolts. Looks like Ford finally fixed that oversight. The whine from the rear end at 60 seems to be getting beter as well.
