When I'm cruising at a slow speed in pretty much any gear and I upshift, my car makes a clunking noise unless I ease out the clutch very slowly. Is this a normal thing with this transmission or should I get it checked out? The transmission just feels "loose" for lack of a better word.

 

Are you dropping the clutch too fast?

Cause thats what mine did if I drop it/release too quick (when I was learning) rather than ease it out.
It sounds like its the clutch banging together.

Shift better with easing it out and a bit of gas?
Are you new to a manual?

This is the first manual I've driven so I have nothing to compare it to.

 

Manual is nothing new to me, but this particular tremmac transmission is. I did a search and a lot of other people have this clunking problem so I'm assuming it's "normal"

 

Like I said, I've never had a manual until this car, so I can't really compare it.

I thought it was just my own bad habit of releasing the clutch too quickly with not enough gas to make it a smooth transission.

If I have a smooth shift, no clunk.
If I release too fast without a tad of juice, I get the 'clunk'

 

i'm getting the same clunking noise from my transmission. i even took my car back to the dealer. they said it's normal though
you can even hear that clunking noise if you push your car from behind with a gear in...
it sounds like a backlash in gears.

IMO the entire transmission is very noisy. i had such a noisy transmission in one of my previous cars (ford granada) but that was 20 years old car! i wouldn't expect that in a brand new car...

 

No clunking noises from my manual transmission... seems perfect.

 

have you tried to push your car with a gear in?

This tranny is a real dandy, it has gear chatter, gear whine, clunking when shifting from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, (not bad going to 4th). Just general all around drive line slack/slop. This is probably what your feeling when you let off the gas at low RPM, then step on it again, this is the slack in the drine line. Makes a clunking noise. Sometimes I have flashbacks of my old Muncie in my 68 Camaro. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Bottom line. If it doesn't grind when shifting it's supposedly normal. To the person that doesn't hear anything from his tranny, get some new batteries for your hearing aides.

 

my tranny seemed noisy too, until I put the 2 missing bolts in the dust sheild. now it"s very quiet

Some of you might remember TV coverage of the Trans-Am Racing Series from a few years back. During "in-car" shots, the tranny was the loudest thing you heard. Most of them were Tremacs. If they didn't worry, I'm not going to worry.

 

This discussion has had a calming effect for me too. Mine clunks. My previous two cars were Nissan Maximas: 02 and 04. The 02 was a manual and it was smooth as silk. This tranny clunks, no question. I asked about it elsewhere and was told by a Ford tech (online, not at dealer) it's probably just driveline lash, so long as there isn't a grinding sound it's ok.

It sounds to me like the tranny crossmember bolts are loose. It's my first Ford Manual and first tremac, so I have nothing to compare it to either, but it does seem a little sloppy.

 

Ok, so if I let loose the clutch...its NOT suppose to clang/clank? (like on other cars) and for some reason the T3650 does.

Again I just thought I was releasing the clutch too fast...
Or are we talking about something else...

Cause yet AGAIN...I have only driven this manual. So I have nothing to compare it to.

 

This T3650 is a dream compared to my last car (98 GT) which had a T-45. The T-45 was the notchyest and noisyest trans ever.

I had a grind from 2nd to 3rd today, but it could have been my screw up. I'll have to keep an eye on it. I feel that slight clunking that everyone is talking about, but only when I don't give it enough gas. I'm still getting used to the hydro clutch also which is pretty different from the king cobra I had in the 98.

yes, indeed. that was a stupid question...
i just can't underestand the AMOUNT of the backlash in this transmission...

 

Quick and easy ... whats backlash?

 

It's spacing or play between various gears in the driveline. Tranny to driveshaft, driveshaft to ring (pinion to ring). When you're driving forward, that lash or slack is taken up. When you downshift (engine brake) the lash gets taken up in the opposite direction, hence the clunk.

 

I haven't had any transmission noises. I have a 05 GT that I purchased in Nov 04 with 3600 miles.
