Cleaning C&L Filter

What is the recommended interval for cleaning the air filter for the C&L intake? I would assume it should be the same as a K&N kit.

If the design of the filter is exactly the same of the K&N, I know it's 25-30K. The C&L kit uses an S&B filter so the mileage could vary.

I've emailed this exact question to JLT about a week ago, and Jay Tucker responded as follows:
"S&B says 5-10,000 miles.. but when it's black, clean it."
which now brings up the question, how do you clean it?
hose it down with water? do you need to oil it later?
someone please shed some light on the subject

I can answer that. You can buy a kit from Murrays, Autzone, etc. made by K&N. It comes with a cleaner and oil kit. You spray the cleaner on the filter and let it soak for a while, then rinse it out with water. You need to let the filter dry completely then you can re-oil it.

You should be able to get the K & N kit at Walmart for about $10.

Unfortunately I don't have a Walmart, Kmart, Autozone or pretty much anything here in Germany. :-) That's why I have to buy it online.

Here's a tip for you guys: Use a hair dryer to speed up drying the filter. Plus it gets it completly dry before re-oiling.

Why not just get a new filter?

AEM makes a dry cone filter that will fit either the C&L and JLT. I have one on my C&L and it works great for me. You have to be careful not to over oil the cotton gauze filters like K&N. If you do, oil gets on the MAF sensor and will throw a CEL. This just happened to my buddies Mustang. He had so much oil on the filter it dripped! We took it off, cleaned the MAF and the filter and he was OK.

Summit Racing sells the K&N, Accel and others, not to mention several different colors of oil.

Do you happen to have a part number for the AEM??

Also you can always buy a spare filter through S&B and then when you need to clean yours you can simply install the clean filter and let the one your cleaning dry out for a day or two and then re oil it lightly and have it ready for the next interval

S&B has cleaning instructions on their web site ( http://www.sbfilters.com/filter_cleaning.php ) and sells cleaning kits designed to keep you from over-oiling their filters. Over-oiling can lead to contamination of the MAF sensor so it should be avoided. If they are supplying the filter to C&L, etc. they should be able to cross-reference it and tell you the correct amount of oil to use - you can call them at (800) 358-2639. Since cleaning doesn't have to be done that often you might as well do it right, the amount of oil a gauze filter actually needs is less than most people would guess at.

Thanks for the info! I am going to run over to Walmart and just buy the K&N kit. It's exactly the same thing and I don't have to pay shipping and wait. I've used it before and you just have to make sure to be liberal with the spray oil.

S&B have posted cleaning and oiling tips on their site, explaining the dangers of over-oiling, and tips on how to apply exactly the right amount of oil onto the filters after cleaning them.
the howto is available as a video on http://www.sbfilters.com/popvideo/sb...rcleaning.html
having watched that, i think i'm pretty comfortable cleaning and oiling the S&B filter on my JLT II intake.. let's see
