Certification for after market wheels

I bought recently a wheel package from the states. Here in Europe we need to have a certificate to show the traffic administration department. The tire shop couldn’t help me. Don’t you need such certifications in the US?

No. But I believe that they need to be DOT (Department of transportation) approved before they're sold to the public.

You may want to contact American Racing (I believe they make your wheels). If anyone can help, they can.

Hi WaltM

I sent my request to AR. Now, I am curious what they provide to me.

I hope they can provide the paperwork you need.

Good Luck.

I believe DOT certified wheels also carry a specific marking.

I dunno, but am pretty sure they will give you a SEMA approval rating - I am just guessing, but dont believe DOT has any say over aftermarket stuff...I just recall years ago my cragers were SEMA-a1 approved or something like that.

here in the USA one of the few real freedoms we enjoy over other free nations is that you can pretty much do what you want- within reason- as long as its not tampering with emissions- but most of the country dont have Emissions testing, so even if a certain supercharger aint C.A.R.B. approved, folks can run them anyway.

I think the worst Ive heard about is Australia- if you change even TIRE SIZE you need an engineers certificate...things like lowering springs, control arms, engine/tranny, etc gets into big bucks just to get a cert. for registration.
Ive seen a few contraptions over the years that maybe shouldnt be on public USA roads, but generally here things are pretty much do as you want...just saw a trike out tonight that looked like half a small car(front engined) with a crude pipe 'frame' holding what looked to be a stock small bike front fork/wheel...I think a decent bump would break it in two - when you see stuff like that, makes you kinda wonder if maybe too much freedom might be a little risky, but thankfully they havent taken an iron fisted approach to car modifications over here yet.

Do they have a little MW looking symbol anywhere on the wheel? If so thats Japan's very stringent approval system, If I understand correctly it one of the tougher standards imposed.
