I've heard 2 somewhere else too. But I also have heard as many as 8 and that was proven with a dyno as well. It really depends on the car, temperature, situation, machine, etc. Removing the HC trap will average around 5 HP. That's a good average.

Um...YES, you trying to tell the guy he imagined his "Real World" experience? We've seen everything from negative numbers to +8.
I don't like to get caught up in numbers, real world experience tells me different. I removed my H-Trap with a K&N filter change. I lost 2 mpg, and the car didn't run right. Put the trap back in and I gained 4mpg, and the cars acceleration was back to normal if not improved.
That might not be everyone's experience. Don't forget there are a lot of variables here. Add up the +'s and the -'s and you end up with a result that's statistically insignificant.
Face it, the car needs a tune after you make significant changes to airflow. Maybe with a paper filter it's not enough, but it sure was with my K&N replacement.

OK,here's one for ya.Took my trap out from the first week I got it(5000 mi now) and my car runs a bit better than my wife's.Revs quicker and pulls better at high RPM.Go figure.

Can you explain exactly where it is and how to take it out.

Has anyone else heard the term, "leaner is meaner?"
Just figured that if you took the H/C trap out and installed a K&N filter you wouldn't be adding enough air to make the car significally lean.
Yes, you are improving air flow, but you aren't increasing boost.
If the stock settings on the 05's is rich, then it seems like you would either be neutralizing the setting or running slightly on the rich side(which I doubt) making more power.
After all, the more AIR you mix w/ the fuel, the more power you are making...yes you do have to add fuel w/ air, but we aren't talking about adding power adders (N20, Turbo, Superchargers).

I think I may be on to something with that last statement. One without the other may be the key. The H-trap by itself isn't enough to trip over the line, but combined with a freer flowing filter, it is
This is my opinion also.

The Mass Airflow sensor will read the extra air and adjust the mixture accordingly. If you have a vacuum leak after the MAF sensor, you will run lean.
I don't see where less restriction will cause a lean situation.
