Can our S197s sound like a Fox

I hear so many mean sounding Foxes go by. The sound I like is a Fox with an offroad H pipe and Flowmasters. It seems like you just cant get the same sound from an S197. Am I correct? I know Flowmaster came out with some new muffler to get the same sound on an S197, but after scouring Youtube I cant find any clips that show and S197 with the signature Flowmaster sound. Nothing even close.

i doubt it...IMO, the 5.0 has its own distinct sound the same way the 4.6 does no matter the exhaust set up. i do however love the way the 5.0 sounds...regardless the exhaust . i just dont think the 5.0 sound can be replicated...especially not duplicated.

then again im biased lol

My answer is also "no". Because the Fox 5.0 is a pushrod motor and our 4.6's are overhead cam. Plus two valve verses three valve.

Not sure what sound you are going for. You can achieve a very radical and aggressive sound with the S197s. Short vid of my car at idle. Downside is car is not street legal, would not do very well in stop n go traffic, and I doubt car could get a mile down the road before being stopped for excessive noise.

The closest that I've heard is the custom mid mounted Flowmaster 40 series setup, sounds pretty deep and clean. My friend just got this setup on his 05 last week (although he has long tube headers instead of stock mani's like in the vid). Sounds pretty good. It's just hard to make these motors sound good IMHO. forensicsteve's big cams help though.

These aren't my friend's, but:

I have heard plenty of New Edge Mustangs that sounded like the FOX cars but that is because the mufflers are located in front of the axle and have lots of tailpipe. The S197’s will never sound like that with the mufflers located right behind the bumper cover.

I agree that chambered pypes style mid mufflers would get you closer to a Fox 5.0 sound, but because of the engine design differences, you'll never truely nail the classic 302 pushrod sound.

I met a girl the other day with a 00’ GT and it sounded fairly “Fox like”. It had Flows and a slight exhaust leak.

My fox before restoration began sounded like it was choked and dying even with flow masters. Don't know why you would want to reproduce that but my 05 sounds nices with borla long tubes, o/r xpipe and cat backs w/ stinger mufflers.

I have two foxes and an S197 and I love the old school fox sound of the shorty headers/off road H pipe/2 chamber flowmasters combo.

I have been doing a little research myself and I found some info on the net and youtube. There is a combo that I think will produce a sound very close to the foxes. It is the following:

JBA shorty headers
Pypes offroad H pipe
Flowmaster axlebacks

There was a guy who had this set-up using the original Flowmaster axlebacks and his car sounded wicked....very much like old school muscle car sound. Unfortunately, he has deleted the video as I tried to load it up again.

I have got the newer Flowmaster American Thunder Classic axleback (i.e. the mufflers have squared off corners) on my car and I can tell you it has a very nice deep rumble to it, much like the flowmasters on my fox. They are being promoted by flowmaster in such a way. And I have to say there is hope that we can get a sound closer to a fox. I am going to be ordering my Pypes off road H pipe tonite from Brenspeed. The key is to go with a chambered muffler like Flowmaster and an off road H....NOT a off road X pipe like most guys. IMO, I think the X pipe sounds very very raspy....definitely will not get the Flowmaster like sound if you go this way. I can hardly wait until my H pipe comes

Nothing sounded better to me than my '93 5.0 with uncatted straight pipes with flowmaster 2 chambers, P600b supercharger whining at idle and an E303 cam loaping. The car sounded mean as hell.

I hear ya! I had a 86’ with 1 ¾ long tubes, 3” H-pipe (no cats) and Flows that dumped at the axle. I was spinning that motor to 7500rpm NA. It sounded so sweet it made your blood curdle! It had idle chop at 1200rpm’s! I would love to have another car that sounded like that (like an old Fox for example) but I sure do enjoy my “quiet” 07’ (that probably makes twice the power that my 86’ did) now that I am an old guy (38).
