Cams Anyone?
I have been thinking about my next set of mods and I was leaning towars cams and gears, probably 4.10's. I really don't know a lot about cams. Can you guys educate me on them? Which cams are the most popular, work the best, etc...
Thanks for ANY help,

Worth it? Yes.
Expensive? Yes.
Realized their potential? Not unless I get ported heads.

Lots of opinions and debate. It should be a start for you...

IMO, by themselves they are not worth it. For the amount of money you are going to spend and the amount of gain just don't make sence to me. I'd do the gears, and then look into the cams.

Have you considered delete plates or an underdrive pullies? Some people are opposed to them for fuel economy and charging issues, respectively. With 4.10s you're going to be turning the motor faster than with the stock gears, so you're accessies will be spinning faster and you won't be spending as much time in the lower rpm range.
Personally I'm opposed to adding 4.10s to my car, mainly because I drive it on the highway and using SLP Loudmouths. After I add delete plates and an x-pipe to it, I'm going to look into cams when the warranty is up in 15,000 miles.

Since he already has a CAI, long tube headers, and a performance tune he is running out of easy mods (Porting the heads or tearing into the motor is going to be expensive too). He'll have to do something, cams, blower or nitrous in order extract some more power from the car. If he has a blower package in mind, he might want to consider picking a set of cams that will compliment it.
Cams are not cheap to install. Plain and simple. For the price and power, money would be better spent on a s/c or t/c. I am not one to do these either. This car will stay n/a and I will not do cams.
Like I said before. Do the gears and then take some time to really look into the cams. I would do the deletes, ud pullies and an e-water pump, way before the cams.
Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for all your help guys. I have been looking into the delete plates, but I have been keeping an eye out in the marketplace for some slightly used ones. As for the UDP's, I have 2 12'' rockford fosgate subs in the trunk and a rockford fosgate amp, I heard somewhere that you can't do UDP's and have subs??

Do you have to have a specific cam that goes with a SC. Lets say I am thinking either Whipple or Procharger, would I be able to use the same cam for each?

Yeah, because you spelled it wrong. I've been drinking alot lately.
Lots of good questions in this thread. Things like which cams work with what blower, should I buy underdrive pulleys and delete plates if I'm going to upgrade to a supercharger later? Delete plates could be sold easily when your done with them. You could modify a stock set of plates if you wanted for less than the cost of delete plates.

Even adding new heads from tillmanspeed still would keep you under the cost of a s/c and make around another 50 or so hp which is what a $5500 saleen blower gets you

I have stage 4 comp cams with my procharger (P1SC or D1SC for sale). They work great. You can run CMDP with a blower and cams, you can't run UDP's with a blower, but you can with a Turbo.
Cams definitely affect emmissions and I don't believe that they are CARB legal, however you could always call Comp or one of the other Cam manufacturers and ask. I think if you had cats on your car you might be able to pass emmissions, but it might be tough.

May I ask you how much the comp cams cost with install cost included?

Well I think you can get the cams, springs, and retainers for around $900. I have no clue on the cost of install as I did my with the help of friends. I am trying to work a deal on a used GT500 right now and unless they want my car as is I'll have my cams for sell.

I went to Brenspeed last wednesday and after retuning we determined no extra gain with them(heads) installed.
I did get 35/38 RWHP but thats what most are stating about the cams.
