CAI Alternative Options

Alright so I'm really itching for my next mod. I REALLY want a JLT II Combo pack from bamachips, but $550 is kind of too much for me. I tried looking for used ones but they're still at least $400 after having to buy new tunes/tuner.
So I'm wondering if there are any GOOD alternatives that may not require a tune, but still give you good HP gains and a seat of your pants difference.
I've heard of the K&N (i think tacobill has one) and the Granatelli or BBK CAIs.

So I'd just like some opinions.

550 for 25hp is about as good as it gets.

How are the JLT's in comparison to the Steeda's? The Steeda is $329 and then the X3 with tunes is $450. Sooo pretty much $800

If you're first on $$$ get a tuner and tunes first from Brenspeed/Bamachips/etc. Later if you buy an intake from them they should give you an updated tune at no charge. You should contact them first to confirm though.

I would really like to find out if that's true, but i think it's dang near impossible to get a hold of Doug. I'm set on a bama tune because my stang is an auto.

Noob. Im in the same boat as you. I want to change my CAI, but I also need to buy the tuner/tunes also. Was hoping I could just do the tuner/tunes first. That would eliminate the smart tranny issue until a month or so when I can get the CAI.

Curious which route you will take. Why the JLT vs Steeda or another brand?

I think the JLT and C&L intakes give the most hp on average (with tune): about 30hp.

You could get the C&L intake for about $300 and then use the "no tune" insert, which allows it to be used without a tune. Then get a tune. But I really think you should just get the CAI+tune together. From what I hear on these forums, it sounds like a tune+CAI will change your life. Mine's in the mail, I'll let you know if it changes mine.

Hmm, I didn't do my research before I spoke, but here is a C&L "Racer" Intake for $300:
http://www.ninosport.com/C-L-Trueflo...&category=1105

But the "racer" intake cannot be modified to be run tune-less.. you need the "street" version for that, and I haven't seen anything under $330-350... (coulda sworn apdperformance had one for $330, but they don't even sell the C&L without a tune right now)

So I retract my statement.. and now I just say "get CAI+tune."

LOL, I had seen the racers intake before and thought it was the "street" one. I wanted to get a tune eventually, but wanted to get a CAI first then a tune later (need extra $$$). I suppose I should just wait and get them both at the same time when I have the $$$ saved. Thanks for the info.

Check the Brenspeed site. $500 - 600.00 is pretty cheap for an additional 20-25 hp. Brenspeed, 2005 2006 2007 MUSTANG GT PERFORMANCE PARTS

Just out of curiosity, what's the big deal on these CAI's?

Isn't the K&N, which is about $250, pretty much the same as BBK or C&L etc? They all principally do the same thing. The only difference is the name and the material being used.

I think the reason people don't recommend the K&N's for the Mustang is because the tube is the exact same as the stock one, so there are virtually no gains.

It seems like everyone else I know who mod their cars (non mustangs) swear by K&N.

I am eventually going to upgrade from the stock CAI, most likely going to go with K&N or that new Airaid one.

The K&N is NOTHING like the JLT and C&L. The JLT and C&L let in soo much more air compared to the K&N. And as we all know, more air = more fuel = more HP!

Do they have one? 'Cause I do. No tune required, it's a solid component, and it definately adds power, improves gas mileage, throttle response...and sound.
