CA guys...I need Help!

I'm from NY and moving to CA this spring. I wanted to know are there any Exhaust systems that are legal out there?

I wanted to go with Bassani long tube headers, x-pipe, and Race Axle backs. Everything I'm reading says that their long tubes aren't legal in CA for street cars.

Whats' the deal? Can you guys educate me?

Any exhaust mods other than catbacks better have a C.A.R.B. certificate. No long tubes or off road pipes. I have JBA shorty headers and they have a cert.

BTW, welcome to Kalifornia, now go home!

Looks like the only kind of X-pipes that you can have are the ones that splice in and still retain the factory cats

cats must remain in the exhaust system, anything behind the cats is ok, they do have noise limits but like most states its not enforced hard, headers must have a C.A.R.B. # and certification to be legal,

people are confused with the saying "50 state emmissions legal" not the same requirement for CA

I thought it was a federal offense to remove a working catalytic converter in any state.

So if I threw on the catted Bassani X-pipe here in NY, would I get in trouble once I'm in CA?

Yes it is not legal and when you get here you will be required to have your car smogged. Also CAI and Tunes are also NOT legal.

The ONLT things that are legal in Comyfornia are JBA Shorty Headers and Short X-Pipes such as the FRRP and Bassani And you can also stick on just about any muffler, although if they are to loud you may get hassled. Rare but you may. You cannot replace the cats under any circumstances. In fact your car with it's current cats may not be legal. You better check your under your hood for a sticker and make sure.

I have to agree with Richard on this one. Normally cars that are heading to California have different EPA requirements from cars going to the other 49 states. So your car in purely stock form may not pass in California!! You need to check these things out better before you worry on how to mod your car. Just my .02$

As a former NYer, I can tell you this: You'll hate the gas here. Anyway, new NY cars all get the CA emissions equipment anyway.

I bet, as long as you have cats at all, you'll pass any visual inspection. The next thing is smog, but only after the car gets older. They don't do any safety inspections here at all, so you'll see cars with the tires worn through, falling apart, etc. Those are the ones without insurance and who aren't getting smog checked or anything else anyway. But I'm not bitter... LOL

Are you serious about the CAI and tunes???? How the hell can that affect anything?!

The gas in NY is ~$3.19/gal right now. I didn't buy this car to save money on gas though. haha

Yes I am serious. The only CAI that are technically legal and CARB Approved ones and those will be the ones that require no tune. I think the Only CAI+Tune that is now legal here is the FRRP one. And how it effects the emissions is it is fattening up the fuel mixture and advancing the timing so it changes the parameters of the stock vehicle. Does it make more pollutants I seriously doubt it but some of the tuners also turn off the rear O2's and this makes incomplete OBDII Cycles.

And we run a different form of gasoline her and also the highest octane you can get is 91 so if you have a 93 Octane tune you will need to get rid of it and have a California 91 Octane tune instead. Trust there is a difference.

California is ... I'm all for being as green as possible, but I wish they'd have the equivalent to a 'gas-guzzler' thing for guys who want to mod their cars. Add another $500 at the time of sale so we're exempt from all the bullpoop CA emission crap

Yeah, I know you don't have 93. I was out there most recently in November (down in Huntington Beach). I haven't done the CAI/tune yet, but I was thinking of doing it before I left NY. Maybe now I'll hold out till I get there and see what's what. In NY we're running 87, 89, 93 and they all are 10% ethanol now.
