Bullitt mufflers on a GT?
Bullitt mufflers on a GT?
I was thinking of putting the GTAs on my GT but I saw where you can buy Bullitt mufflers ($429) now and was wondering if anybody has done this. Would love to hear how they sound on an otherwise basically stock GT as it is my first mod. Dont have CAI or X pipe like the Bullitt.

I think KC posted somewhere that the H pipe is not available separately, and it was over $1000 for the entire assembly, if I remember correctly. I think in his sticky post there's more info.
The GTA tip's look a lot better than the Bullitt tips. Not sure if they sound the same as I have only compared them to one Bullitt at work and his wasn't broken in yet (less than 1000 miles).

The Bullitt sounds like it does based on the whole intake/exhaust system. If you're looking to replicate that sound its going to get pricey. Plus IMO, its too quiet. My GT with stock mufflers, a CAI, and a dyno tune is louder. I've test driven the Bullitt.
The stock GT exhaust system is not louder. The Bullitt system is as loud as a vehicle manufacturer can legally make it.
Here is info from a Ford Engineer on the project

Bullitt Exhaust Info
The system is retuned (within the existing package) from front to back. Aside from the tips, there is no way to tell what has changed beyond looking at part numbers. The h-pipe is modified internally as are the mufflers (completely different design on the inside). The exhaust tips were designed to work with the rest of the exhaust changes and were critical to delivering this sound (though the basic sound comes from the h-pipe and muffler redesign). Emcon is our exhaust supplier (recently spun off from ArvinMeritor). I provided them the target sound I was looking for and we worked together to come up with the engineering changes to deliver the sound. Lots of computer modeling coupled with in vehicle fine tuning. I will take exclusive credit for the tips, though! To go along with the signature sound, I made it as loud as legally possible, too. I spent a great deal of time on this exhaust system. Sounds like most of you like it. If you compare the layout of the S197 exhaust system to that of either the SN95 or even the '68, you'll see that it is substantially different. Getting the S197 Bullitt to sound the way it does forced us to sharpen our pencils and put on our thinking caps. It was sort of like trying to make a clarinet sound like a tuba (maybe not the best analogy). Hope this info helps.
FYI - Bullitt muffler code (stamped on can) is F1-8087
GT with automatic trans is F1-7991
GT with manual trans is F1-7849

I would have made the car louder if I could but I had to keep the car under 80.0 dBA in legal noise certification.
Correction: the stock intake/exhaust system in the GT is not louder than the Bullitt. That is true. But read a little closer next time. I said mine had a CAI and dyno tune, which does make the car louder (more the tune than the intake). Who knows maybe it was a particularly quieter Bullitt than usual, or maybe it needed to be broken in but I drove MY GT AS DESCRIBED to the dealer, drove the Bullitt over a 6 miles ckt, including going under a bridge (where I revved the engine
), was greatly impressed by the tone but not by volume. Not 5 minutes later I took the same route home and confirmed that my car as set up (aftermarket intake/tune but stock exhaust) was somewhat louder than that Bullitt which had less than 1000 miles on it. I don't want to start an argument but having personally driven both cars back to back, the Bullitt just isn't that loud.

Thanks for all the input guys. I appreciate it. Sounds as if I will go with the GTAs. BTW, Moss Motors has the Bullitt mufflers $429 and Ford Racing X-pipe (i mistakenly thot was on the Bullitt) for $139. I love the sound of the Bullitt and knew it wasnt all from the mufflers, was just wondering if put on a GT if the sound would compare/exceed the GTAs. Thanks again for all the advice.

The mufflers from a Bullitt are part of a 'system' designed to work together, and while they might sound fine on a stock GT they may not sound the way you'd like then to.

The stock GT exhaust system is just not designed to be as loud as the Bullitt exhaust system. Even with the addition of a CAI and tune the stock GT system will not be louder. One thing the Bullitt does have is a little more cabin soud proofing, so with the windows closed it will and does seem quieter.
I'm happy though that you are happy with the volume of your GT. There is a difference between good sound and too loud, and some of the aftermarket systems are too loud. You see them for sale on eBay all the time after guys discover this.
