Building the Perfect Beast

Has anyone seen this video? It was a dvd included in one of the winter issues of MM&FF. I've been reading several threads about getting the most HP out of an N/A 4.6 and several members have claimed that they can barely get 300 RWHP with their extensive list of mods. If you didn't see the video, here was the setup:
  • Stock: 279 RWHP
  • Added C&L CAI and Predator 93 tune: 293 RWHP
  • Added 62mm BBK throttle body: 300 RWHP
  • Added BBK UDP's: 308 RWHP
In the end, they added long tube headers, a new exhaust, shifter, vortech SC, and got 460 RWHP.

So, for those of us who can't (financially) go with an SC, according to this video 300 RWHP could be made with a CAI, tune, TB, and UDP's.

I've never dynoed and I have an automatic with the JLT CAI and 93 Race tune from Bama. All I can say is that my GT pulls like hell. I'm thinking that if mine was anywhere near 279 RWHP stock that with the CAI & tune I've got to be creeping up on 300...add a TB and UDP's and I've got it. Right?

What other mods can easily be installed to gain added HP? Keep in mind I am a novice!

Please keep in mind that this question has been asked before, but it always gets off topic almost instantly. (See Maximum HP w/out SC thread for a good example)

HiJoe,
I think that 279 hp rating would be for a stock manual transmission not our auto trans. The stock auto trans car would put down more like 255-260 rwhp. Look at my mods and my car dynoed at 275 hp and 278 torque at the wheels. And you right they pull hard but us auto guys give up about 20 hp to the manual guys to start with.

I watched the DVD, and they showed the before/after dyno runs.. I don't know why JDM would lie about it.

The DVD was filmed in JDM's shop and the results were shown on JDM's dyno. I'd like to thik that they didn't fake the results just because they were paid or something...

I thought the results were a bit skeptical? Perhaps corrected for altitude and so forth??

I agree Mike. Why would they lie? I didn't think they would either...so I bought a BBK Throttle Body. I had it installed and removed twice; both with and without my S/C. In both cases...the darn thing would not work for me. I'm sure it must have worked for JDM, but they'll have to tell me the secret before I install it again.

Just got my 07 GT/CS 5-speed dyno several weeks ago at Brenspeed.

I have a 93 Brenspeed tune, UDP, Electric Water Pump, Alum. Drive Shaft, and a Tuneable CAI. All Brent could get for me was 291.17 HP and 302.26 Torque. Weather was 86 F, 55% Humidity, and SAE 1.04

Brent days that was about aveage, he has seen some freak motors from the factory that pull 10 to 15 more HP and he's seem some weak ones too.

You picked up 30 HP - more than 10%. That's not too bad, if you ask me. But those looking for more shouldn't dibble in the land of natural aspiration...it just isn't worth it on these tiny engines.

+1 for manuals

280 seems high for stock anyway, regardless of tranny
