Budget SuperCharger - My 07 GT's Vortech V2

Since we lost so much of the forums, I figured I'd share my Mustang's supercharger story with everyone again...

There are lots of great supercharger kits on the market, but most cost much more than the average working guy (like me) can afford. Good thing that there are some budget minded blowers on the market that can be upgraded as finances allow...

I have a 2007 Mustang GT coupe that is my daily driver. It features the factory 5R55S 5-speed automatic transmission. The engine is 100% factory stock, as are the exhaust and suspension. It's a heavy, well-optioned car that weighs 3,420 lbs at the dragstrip (3,600 lbs if you include me).

The only mods to the car are...
  • Vortech V-2 SQ Standard S-trim Supercharger system (non-cooled). I paid just $3716 for the complete kit brand new.
  • Ford Racing 3V0 spark plugs (copper & one heat range colder than stock).
  • Ford Racing 4.10 ring & pinion gears.
  • Fuddle Racing street/strip stall converter which flashes to 4,800 rpm's with the Vortech supercharger installed (3,800 rpm's naturally aspirated).
  • BF Goodrich 275/40/17 drag radials for dragstrip use.
  • Custom dyno tuning by John Garner at the Horsepower Ranch in Maple Valley, WA. Tuned conservatively (with DiabloSport's Predator tuning software) as this car is a daily driver!
Results - dyno and the drag strip...
  • On a Mustang Chassis Dyno it made a peak of 364 RWHP at 6400 rpm's with a very safe A/F ratio and conservative tuning.
  • Boost is 5.8 psi when the stall converter flashes (4,800 rpm's) and builds linearly to 10.5 psi at the redline/shiftpoint (6,400 rpm's).
  • Best 1/4 mile passes at Pacific Raceways near Seattle, WA were a 12.34 @ 111.9 mph and a 12.33 @ 110.5 mph. See times slips.

Very nice Brian!!

Did you do any of the install yourself?

Where did you pick up the S/C from?

Have you looked into what an intercooler would cost as an upgrade?

I had our local Ford dealership install the supercharger the "first" time. They did a great job and charged a reasonable price. A year after install, the supercharger's pulley bearing died, so I pulled the supercharger out myself and shipped it back to Vortech for warranty repair. I converted the car back to N/A so I could drive it while waiting for Vortech to rebuild the blower. I reinstalled it myself when it came back. I was a lot easier than I thought, so now I wonder why I paid someone else to install it in the first place.

I bought the blower from Stillen Motorsports. Great service, great pricing, and they really helped when there was a slight issue with Vortech initially (which was resolved to my satisfaction).

It looks like the upgrade for an intercooler would set me back about $1500-$2000. So instead, I've been looking into a Snow Performance Water-Methanol Injection Kit (about $500) that will not only cool the intake charge like an intercooler, but also serves to increase the effective octane of the fuel mixture. And, the guy that does my dyno tuning swears by how well they work as he uses these kits on his own supercharged Mustangs. Supposedly worth about 100 rwhp as you can dial in a lot more timing.

This is basically the same I did with my 2000 GT...except I bought my blower slightly used and got it for half price. I have put 15000 miles on my car and have never felt a need for a intercooler (even though I have had a intercooler kit sitting in the garage for 3 years. It runs 12.5's@111 and I have open tracked it and have never seen AIT's above 137 degrees.

Hey Brian,

Want my V6 rear emblem to make your blown V8 a complete sleeper?

Great write up!

Hi, Steve! Yes, as a matter of fact I'd love to put your V6 emblem on the back of my car. I'd be happy to send you mine if you want it. I think I'm going to paint the hood pins body color, too, to make them less obvious. I hope all is well for you and that the furniture biz is treating you well.

I love boost on a budget! It pains me to hear about people spending $6K to $8K for a blower, especially if they then post slower ET's at the track. Any supercharger kit on the market should make any 05-10 GT a mid 12 second car (or faster). However, I recently read a magazine review of the '10 Roush with 435 hp that only ran low 13's at 107 in the 1/4 mile. There's a lot of non-blown GT's running that quick.

Aside from racetrack ET's, I though you guys might be interested in real world improvements my basic Vortech blower provides. All stock, an 05+ GT automatic runs 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and 0-100 mph in 13.7 seconds. With the blower and drag radials, my '07 GT runs 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and 0-100 mph in 9.9 seconds. The centrifugal blower is a great improvement at all speeds, but really blows away a stock GT at higher speeds (getting to 100 mph almost 4 seconds quicker than stock!).

Were going to need this with the 5.0 and even the 3.7 coming out. A stock 05-10 is going to be pretty pathetic in about 6 months. Its either put a Vortech on or trade up to an '11 GT. im still very undecided. But the '11 with a 6spd and upgraded brakes, suspension you are still losing out. **** Ford!

Trust me; once you get boost, you'll be hooked. There is so much power available, and upgrades are even easier than staying naturally aspirated.

If the '11 GT really makes 400 flywheel hp, then any performance-minded 05-10 owner will be scrambling for boost if he/she wants to stay ahead of an '11.

But it becomes an addiction as I am already getting bored with my current power levels... you always want more

How do you like the 4.10's? I currently have 3.31's in the car as delivered and was thinking of going with 3.73's. I was worried that the 4.10's with a S/C would be too much, when I do get one. As an advantage I am running 285's in the rear, so the traction is pretty good. But I can light them up quite easily with just the tune & CAI that I have.

I also have a 100 mile commute to work on the highway. It's not my daily driver, but still.

Going bigger and better? Would your system be ok to run on a stock block, or is the s/c running too much boost?

Yeah, and more importantly, less complicated.

Yeah, but 10 psi is pushing it.
