Best First Mod for Performance?
#23
Hands down, tuner! You'll need it down the road anyway if you plan on doing more mods. Don't believe everything you may read in marketing materials though. A tune by itself will yield you 10-15 h.p. in the "real world".
Combined with a CAI, it can gain you 25-30, but not by itself.

I just put a MMR cold air intake and the SCT 87 tune. How much more performance do you get with 91? I would never spend the money for anything over 91 octane. But that's just me.

thanks for all the replies guys.. probably gonna save up some money for the C&L intake with predator combo. Anybody have a dyno of this with just the 87octane tune compared to 93octane tune? Is it worth it with the high cost of gas?

I've read this a couple of times. One magazine said premium will get you 5 rwhp on a GT. Another magazine said its set for premium and adjusts as necessary. The 05 GT is suppose to have a good system with two knock sensors. Car and Driver did an experiment maybe 5 years ago with regular and premium. Cars built for premium would run on regular but lost a lot of power, maybe 10%. Cars built for regular with knock sensors made modest gains with premium, maybe 2-3%. The cars with knock sensors had the technology to "read" fuel and take advantage of higher grades. That said, you probably wouldn't notice 5 HP anyway.

My 1st performance mod will be the K&N/Predator deal ($500)... I can put the K&N on myself and get the immediate response, then later on when I do exhaust I will use the tuner. Considering most places want $260+ for the K&N and $400+ for the Predator, it's a really good price. Auto Zone gave me a $337 price on the K&N. With that, I like to think I'm getting the tuner for $163

The amazing Carnac puts his hand to his head...
Fresh out of the Academy and you bought the car with your (ridiculous) low intrest loan right?
If your worried about the gas bill, don't do ANY mods, as you will be running the car in not the best configuration for fuel savings... in other words, your gonna be heavy on the gas enjoying the work you just put into it.
http://rpmoutlet.com/05gt.htm has what you are looking for. Why buy the K+N with the Pred though if it doesn't need a tune? Pony up the extra cash and put the C+L, (or Steeda) in, you will be happier.

Not gonna get any from me... no long trips to measure the MPG... no baseline. But then the car is not *really* a daily driver...
I have the C+L, I like it. It was super easy to install, and I like the looks. I know you can get the aluminum polished too, (aftermarket, it doesn't come that way).
Careful about the "I didn't pay for college" thing, your fellow Academy rats will get upset. Your supposed to say "I paid for college, I just didn't pay money"...

I got the K&N/Predator thing so I could get the immediate responce of the K&N. When I eventually get my exhaust, I'll already have the Predator to tune it. It was either $500 now, or $260 now and $400 later.
