Beating A Charger SRT8....
#1
I am not intersted in having the fastest Mustang GT around...first of all, there are already too many AMAZING Mustangs out there (nice work, everyone), but most importantly, I don't have the money.
I am, however, quite interested in beating those ugly new Charger SRT8's off the line. I guess my question would be, what would be enough to do that--and to do that affordably? Would, for example, a C&L CAI and SCT XCAL 2 be enough?
Thanks in advance for all of your truly valuable advice...and remember...think budget.....
Thanks!

Well, I had no problem with a non-SRT Charger, the 340 HP one. At the time all I had was a tune and that's it.
The SRT-8, however is a 425 H.P. machine, I dunno about that one. You may be chasing your tail trying to best it.

I understand the SRT-8 is quite a beast at 425 horses, however, it is also a beast at 4266 lbs. and four doors. Motor Trend's latest test of the SRT-8 (vs. the 06 GTO) found a 0-60 time on the SRT-8 of 5.0 sec. That's not terribly impressive...I don't think....
Maybe you're right, though. Mine is an 06 GT Auto...and maybe it simply can't be done affordably....
Just thought I'd throw it out there though...

add 410 gears and you probably should be fine. i believe they are going to be like a 13.50 car. havent seen a test yet. but i havent been keeping up with much lately

Kind of an unfair compaison. I believe the charger is at least a 5.7 (350 ci) motor. I recall that the SRT-8 is larger. Therefore at 348 hp they are at about 1 hp per ci for the base charger. Which a 05-06 GT should handle easley (we are getting 285+- from 281 ci). The SRT-8 has more cubic inches (i think). It would be like putting a bigger motor in the GT. Wait I think one is coming (Cobra??) It's importang to always compare apples with apples. It would be unfair to compre a 05 Mustand GT with a Saleen S7. Not just cubic inches make horse power, money makes horse power. But if you just want to kill a charger or anything else of that calibur on the road then a super charger is the way to go. JMO.
Just checked it is a 6.1 ci motor with 485 hp. Like the old saying " you can make a barn door fly with enough HP!!).

Get an intake and reflash to start (about $600 and well worth it). That brings you up to about 330 hp at the flywheel. Our curb weight is about 3400 lbs. That gives you 10.3 lbs/hp.
Charger SRT8 at 425 fwhp and a weight of 4266 lbs gives 10.03 lbs/hp.
Drivers race. Throw on 4.10 gears and get used to them and it tips your way.

Yup, myself, Elvism, Dysan and 05SatinGT were at that same racetrack, guy drove the thing all the way from Michigan, he was a Chrysler Engineer and he ran 13.0 every time!!

That doesn't surprise me at all. But considering what's in there, one would THINK it could be in the high 12's. That darn weight really hinders it.
On a "budget" it's a hard one to get around. I concur that a CAI, tune, and 4.10's will probably get you close.
Question is, do you want close, or no contest

I know this will disappoint everyone, but "close" is enough for me...like you guys said, "money makes horsepower" and unfortunately, that's one thing I don't have much of. Things are tight enough just trying to make the payments on the car....let alone supercharging, etc.
Thanks again for all the advice....of course, more is always welcome!

And, I know I could look it up, but how much for 4.10's?

I've been considering 4.10's too. What's everyone been paying for them w/ installation?

Actually that SRT-8 got itself down to 12.9 for the 1/4 after you left Mav!!! I'm guessing that it'll take a great CAI/Tune, some drag radials and some suspension work to beat that beast in the 1/4.

Just checked Dodges web site. No price set yet for SRT-8. No manuel only Auto and 3.06 gears. Im begining to think this was not stock!!!! Or this was some prototype...[attachmentid=37418]

CAI - $200
Tune - $400
4.10 gears - $500
Total - $1100
That *might* bring you close, that might not keep you from being stomped, who knows.
Or if you really want to beat him on the 1/4th add this to the package:
Nitrous - $600
Power on a budget.......
I wonder why no one mentioned that yet...

Before you spend any $ on this I would wait and get some real numbers with a good view under the hood. It just dosen't sound right.... 13/12s stock with a 5 speed auto and no mods  and i agree with sixtysix its a tank :notnice: a really ugly 4 door tank.
