BAMACHIPS (Doug tune question)

Doug,

I had another thread started but didn’t receive much information so I figured I would try going right for the professional.

My question is back east, maybe many places, but back here in New Hampshire our fuel pumps at gas stations have stickers indicating “up to 10% ethanol”. From doing some reading it is my understanding this may have an affect on any custom tuning.

We have 87, 89, and 93 octane here so would your tunes take into consideration the possibility of ethanol being added to fuel? If not and I ordered an XCal2 from you with custom tunes would I need to indicate the tunes will be run using fuel that may have up to 10% ethanol?

Is it possible to order an 87 performance tune and then use 89 octane as well as a 91 performance tune and use 93 octane for that tune, would that be safe?

Getting closer for me to order a CAI and XCal2 and need more information because of this ethanol they are now adding to fuel and I want to be SAFE.

If your useing an 89 tune and adding a higher octane your just waisting your cash. The tune is set for that octane rating.
The only other reason I could see useing a higher octane is if you were racing/running an S/C and wanted to (be safe)prevent detonation.
I don't know of anyone having problems with the pumps added ethanol.

Just give Doug a call or pm him hes very accessible and could answer your question about the ethanol.

Thanks for the information as I have been thinking about tuning my Mustang and didn’t know if the ethanol might have any ill effects on current custom tunes. If they are already tuned with ethanol in the equation then they should be safe…

The equation is oxygenation. The EPA requires it. MTBE or ethanol adds the oxygen required to have the proper mix.

MTBE does not affect the performance of the gas ethanol does.
I don't know if gas in the winter is blended with ethanol, it may not be. I don't think Vermont has ethanol (fewer big towns EPA doesn't require it).
