Axle Back and Cat Back?
As you probably know the cat back goes all the way from the h-pipe back and the axle back is just the mufflers and tips. As far as horsepower goes, it is a minimal difference. Although the aftermarket catback pipes do eliminate a few bends, the factory pipes flow fairly well and I believe they are mandrel bent. If there is a specific exhaust sound that you want and it only comes in axle back, ie. slp loudmouths, don't hesitate to get them. If you are say getting magnaflow, borla, or mack, and the catback pipes are only about $100 more, go with them.
Back in the older days, the full catback was nice because the stock piping was 2.25" and most catbacks were 2.5" (so it opened up more)
Today on the 05-06 mustang, the exhaust is already 2.5" from catback..so the changes are not in the diameter of the piping...
Whats been said is the catback (midpipe section) has a few less bends than the stock exhaust...so better flow, but I'm sure its VERY minimal.
The axleback is litterally JUST that...after the axle pipe (5-6 inches) + muffler/tip
Is it really worth the extra money for a few less bends?
For normal joes...I'd say nope
