Hey guys,

I've installed 4:10's in my car and this past weekend at the track I was very unhappy with the results. My 1-2 and 3-4 shifts were fine but my 2-3 shift was so fast that I thought something was wrong. I datalogged everything and it seems that when the car shifts from 2-3 it drops down to 5080 rpms but when it shifts to 3-4 and 4-5 is drops down to 4400 rpm's and gives a good pull.

I just wondered if any other auto owners are noticing this and have done anything about it? I've got a few ideas for it and I'm about to do some new tuning to hopefully help it.

Unfortunatly I'll have to wait for short time as I also ran my car off the road tonight, dang rain and DR's. It's going to the body shop for a few weeks as it ripped the ground effects off most corners.

THanks Doug.

Yea, Doug... sorry to hear about the mishap. Glad you're OK.

But, about the topic. I never experienced what you are describing. My 2-3 shift was stout... it would bark the tires on the street, and snap your neck at the track. It dropped right to about 4200 rpm in 3rd and pulled very well. My WOT shift points were set at 6250rpm.

Of course, I was running that sweet "AutoMagic" tune at the time. I suggest you call BamaChips... he can help you out.

Sorry to hear about the car, Doug. I haven't hooked it up to the laptop to datalog yet, but I will try soon and see what numbers I get. I just need the weather to clear up here in NY and do some serious driving.

P.S. If you find anything about the tune, keep me in the loop. Your 93 Torque and Performance tune feels great, but if you find there's room for improvement, especially with 4.10 gears...

Does the shifting have anything to do with your tune? I am running your 89 torque tune with a C&L. Tonight 4.10's and a torque converter are going in along with some headers and offroad H pipe. I am just a little worried these mods may mess things up a bit.

Sorry to hear about your 4.10 gear trouble, Doug. Do you think that was a fluke, or in your opinion is switching out the gears in our auto-equipped cars not practical? I have been thinking about getting gears for over a year now, but it just keeps getting pushed back. I'd much rather put that money towards your cam package.

And by the way, I tried to send you a PM about adjusting my current tune file you sent me... but it says your inbox is full.

I have 3.73's in mine with the automatic transmission and the shift points have been bumped up and firmed up using the SC2 tuner. Works great! I get a nice bark of the tires on the 1-2 shift at WOT, and 2-3 works nicely!

One thing to note, is that the OD gear ratio in the auto is 0.75 (it is a taller 0.68 on a manual) . So with 3.73s the final drive ratio is 0.75 X 3.73 = 2.7975

But for your situation your final drive ratio would be 4.10 X 0.75 = 3.075 and that is probably what is messing with your 2-3 shift. YOu are much more low geared than either an auto with 3.73s or a manual with 4.10s!

You should be able to get better shift points if you get yourself an SCT and play with the shift points and shift pressure.

Hope this helps.

Mike

You hear that Doug? Like I said... call BamaChips. heheh lol sorry...

Seriously, Doug... keep us updated on what you find out. Mine never acted like that, and it has been tested plenty. I would be surprised if it is in your tune... otherwise I (and others) would have noticed it too.

I was just told by someone with Ford that 3.73's are about as low as you want to go with the auto. transmission because the auto has 3.31 stock gears. That same person said 4.10's are ok for a manual because the manual has 3.55 stock gears. So as stated earlier an auto going from stock (3.31"s) to 3.73's would be like a manual going from stock (3.55's) to 4.10's. Am I way off here?????? I have an auto and I'm about to pull the trigger on 3.73's.......I was going to go with 4.10's, but I think I have talked myself out of them. And Doug, one of your competitors had the exact same problem you did.

I have an auto and went with the 4.10's, work great. I run a 275/50/17 at the track and 255/45/18's on the street. I am at about 2900 rpm at 80 mph.

I cant wait till my spare pair of 17" wheels show up from SoCal so I can try out my new 275/50-17 M&H Racemasters with my 4.10 (in an auto) gears.

Maybe I wont spin through like every gear anymore.

Coming in LATE but.....

Hey Doug, we talked about this in Orlando......

Maybe its just OUR cars but I have had this problem running two different tunes - the 2 to 3 shift is awfully quick and I was sure I could squeeze out a better time if I ran out second some more.....

(this is with 3.73s and 3.55s..)

Doug I agree, i had 3.73 put in monday, and last night, the 2-3 was fast and so was my 3-4. The car was out of the powerband in 4th gear. My mph is 103, was 104, and et is about the same. But my 60ft was nothing less than a 2.0 on stock tires with stock pressure. Anything you can do? I appreciate it.

Whoever said that has no idea what they are talking about... there are many of us running 4.10s with an auto trans and love them.
