2-3 tenths of a second in the hands of a skilled manual driver

Ford did an awesome job with the Automatic. There really isn't that much of a difference between the Auto and the Manual, speed wise... I believe some of the first magazine times had the Auto faster by a tenth (i may be wrong though)

Anyone remember when the auto used to get the lower gear ratio to help it keep up with the manual? The manual used to come stock with a 2.73 and the auto got a 3.27!

Now it's the other way around! The manual has a 3.55 and the auto gets a 3.31. Wonder what would happen if they had the same gears.

I drove both a 5 speed and an automatic yesterday. The automatic GT is sitting in my driveway tonight. I think the automatic "feels" just as strong and I love the sound as the tranny shifts through the gears at WOT. It reminds me of the close ratio 4 speed transmissions from the 60's-70's. Yeah, I know, I am old as dirt

This must be your first mustang...
most of the 80's-90's mustangs had the 2.73 or 3.27 option

Pfft, even if I can't shift as well or fast as a computer controlled automatic, I still love having a manual...it's just more fun...

Agreed. You just can't beat the sound when matchcing revs on a downshift. The Borlas made it even more fun.

That being said, my 0-60 times blow. Very tough to launch without wicked wheel hop/spin with the 4.10's. I'm getting way too much spin on the 1-2 shift. Way fun but way slow. Must get stickier rubber. The Fuzion 255's look good but don't bite well.

For consistency I would go auto. For giant SEG's, go manual!

My new stang is an auto. First Auto I've owned in 13 years. Do I miss the fun of driving a stick, absolutely! Do I enjoy being able to drink my morning hot tea while driving in for a workout ABSOLUTELY.

As traffic gets worse and worse in my town, I thought I just might get to like an auto. So far I appear to be right.

Now I just have to decide, bolt on everything and change to 4.10s or just get a blower, run 400 rwhp and be done with it.

Nice job buddy!! I never really looked at it like that... So basically, guys with Automatics should get 3.73's or 3.90's to kinda even the score..

But then again, mod for mod, the same still applies.. But that would be nice for Ford to revise the 3.31 in the Autos for a 3.55...

Nice post StangNut!

I actually like the Auto. I bought it with an auto for the wife ( and Atlanta traffic ), but it has grown on me. As much as I wanted to hate it, I think I would still get an auto if I bought another one. My old reflexes could not out shift it...

Before you run out and switch gears, you may want to check out the trans gearing. If I remember correctly, 1st gear is lowere than that in the manual. The 2nd and thrid are properly spaced and 4th is of course a preformance robbing black hole....

I think that putting a set of stock gears from a manual would be nearly prefect on a stock or near stock application. ( Should be several floating around at a good price due to people with the manuals going to lower gears )

I am adding a Saleen SC ( if it ever shows up ) and plan to keep the stock gears. I think any lowere would simply roast the stock tires....

Also, the auto in the 05 is a nice improvement, but it may not hold up well with some high hp mods... The input shaft looks very weak....( I hope is is made out of some good quality steel )

Both the 5-speed and the Automatics get 3.31's gears on the 05's

3.55's came standard only on Mach 1 s and 03-04 Cobras's.

That is true for the V6 only. The GT Manual has 3.55, the GT Auto, 3.31

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one... at least partly. Like you, I have no buyer's remorse getting the auto tranny; it fits my needs perfectly (daily driver & weekend bracket racer). But there is room for improvement. After adding Doug's torq management tune (and changing the shift points to 6250rpm), and installing 4.10, this is a neck snapper now. I am a big proponent of 4.10s for the auto trans cars. I have had them for 5 months now (over 9,000 miles). Simply awesome.

Oh, and 4th gear is not a "performance robbing black hole" on my car. At WOT, it hits 4th at around 75-80mph (depending on which tire is on my car)... and still pulls very well.

I love my automatic !!!

3.73 gears and Bamachips 91 octane performance tune.

Oh baby.

Yea, it chirps on gear changes and it never misses a gear !!!

I live in L.A. and last time I checked the computer info, it said my average MPH was 20 - lol.

BTW, traffic was horrid yesterday, I drove like 50 miles in continuous bumber to bumper slinky like traffic. I saw 3 accidents on the way from rear end collisions. Worst traffic I've seen (I405 of course).

Glad I had an automatic or else my foot would have died.
