Auto Tran Question
I was screwing around today taking the auto tranny through the gears manually (nothing stressful). I noticed on decel in "2", I have a very noticable transmission "whine" (louder than the flows). However, when I drive it as intended (in "D"), I've never noticed the whining sound on decel, at any speed or rpm. Any thoughts as to why there would be a difference? In "D" , it still has to downshift through 2nd on decel (no whine).. but when I manually leave it in 2nd, tranny has something to say... Thx.

I think whine is related to the difference in mph where your decellerating in 2nd as compared to where the transmission automatically shifts to second from third when decellerating and the trans is in drive. You're probably leaving it in second gear at a higher speed and then slowing down, which would increase loading on the gears, vs leaving it in drive. I'm guessing that the trans doesn't downshift by itself in drive until you are traveling less than 5 mph. Even my Honda makes more noise if I'm manually downshifting before it would on its own if left drive.

I think that's normal. Sometimes I leave mine in 2nd while I'm slowly cruising through neighborhoods out looking for an apartment to potentially move into. If you get going to fast in 2nd it'll start making whine noises, that's when the transmission (when not under load) would normally be in a different gear.
