sounds freaking sweet..... I wish I could hear it in person to see how it compares to the off road SLP setup volume wise. I want something a bit quieter, I was afraid this would be too loud, but now so many people are going off road with stingers, and in populated areas too!

Funny you should ask!

In 2 days of driving around with my O/R H, I've seen everything from a 'jaw-drop' stare from a owner of a 98-99 V6 Mustang to the 'Are you nuts??' glare from the big rig driver that's on the left side of my peel out vid.

"Oh, what fun it is to ride in a 300+ Horse hardtop sleigh!"

Bill--great write up. Installed my Magnaflow catted X today, the tips from this write-up saved me a lot of time, especially the battery removal.

Thanks again!

One other quick note--when assembling, it is prudent to set a bead of orange High-temp RTV (I used Permatex Ultra-Copper) on the ball flanges where the manifolds and cat-pipes meet, to prevent exhaust leaks.

This stuff has to sit for a couple hours before test-firing, but it beats having to find a leak, disassemble, seal w/ RTV, then re-assemble and wait.

Bill,

Have you had any problems with exhaust leaks from your H pipe install?

I just got my Pypes off road H pipe today and mine actually came in 4 separate pieces rather than 2 pieces like yours. The upper part of the pipe is separated from the lower portion which is the difference between yours and mine. I am thinking they did this so the fitment is improved....as I have read in a few threads that some guys have had problems with fit.

Did you find that you needed to weld the "H" part of the pipe or does the clamp provided seem sufficient to keep it together?

I actually have the new 4-pc O/R-H now. My old 2-pc got dinged, so it was replaced.

None of the slip joints are welded on mine. I don't think I have any leaks..

Hey Bill,

Did you remove the stock H pipe off the car first and then removed the O2 sensors? I was just under my car and it seems like the forward O2 sensor on the passenger side seems to be blocking the way to one of the nuts on the manifold/H pipe connection.

Did you have any problems removing the 02 sensors in general? I was wrestling with the one blocking the above path and now I am going to take a break...have lunch and regroup.

Remove the stock H with the sensors still attached. When off the car, transfer them to the O/R-H one at a time.

Bill,

I am not sure how you got that upper passenger bolt off especially with that O2 sensor still connected There is not much room.....by any chance do you remember what length extension you used.

There is only 2 paths to it......1st one is looking almost straight up at it right below the area and 2nd path would be on an angle looking in the same way as the heat shield.

I tried to remove the forward O2 sensor to get a clearer path, but did not have much luck as I do not have a 22mm open box wrench.....had a crescent wrench only...I think that is what it's called

I will go and get the proper wrench tomorrow. Any other tips here?

Otherwise everything else is good to go.

Just to let others know, my Pypes off road H also came with some upper flanges which are suppose to help minimize exhaust leaks. They slide right into the tips of the pipes connecting to the exhaust manifolds.

I too was able to remove the the stock H pipe from the bottom. I just left the wires connected and just remove the sensor it self from the pipe. Once the sensors were removed from the stock Hpipe I had a clear shot at the bolts on the header. I also used a swivel socket which I think made it much easier to get to the top bolt...

I used a pretty long extension (or put 2 or 3 extension together). And as CooBra07 indicated, using a swivel socket may help in getting the right angle on the nut.

Is it just me or did Pypes stop making H-pipes, i think most companies are moving away from H pipes and going to X pipes unless it is for long tubes.

Thank you Sir for the great write up...

I don't want to hijack the thread but I have a Quick question for Mr. TacoBill. You tend to know a lot about exhaust...What is your opinion....

Would having the location of the Hpipe moved from the original location, change the sound/tone of the exhaust? I'm thinking of having a custom hpipe made and was thinking of having the muffler guy weld the H more towards the cats???

What do you think?

Stupid me, should have thought of using a 3 piece extension I somehow managed to finally get the upper manifold bolt on the passenger side off with a 15mm wrench from the top of the car.....It took a bit of work trying to reach the bolt, but finally it came off. I used a product called Liquid Wrench which is probably similar to the PB Blaster as it help to loosen the manifold bolts.

But nevertheless the I completed the install today and the car sounds meaner!

No, Pypes still makes off road H pipes for the S197 mustangs. I just picked mine up a couple of days ago and put it on today.

But you are correct, in that most companies are making X pipes for the S197's. I am not sure why? But personally, I prefer the H pipes.....I think they sound more growly than the X pipes which are too raspy sounding for me.

For people who are considering getting a Pypes off road H, the product now comes as 4 separate pieces rather than 2 pieces as shown in TacoBill's pictures.

I have read there were some concerns about fitment, which I think the 4 piece product should address as my H pipe seems to fit quite nicely. Everything lined up great....though it took me awhile to figure it out

Apparently, TacoBill has used both products. Maybe Bill can give us his opinion between the two??
