OK guys/gals.... I know there are a lot of topics on both 4.10 gears and underdrive pulleys... I've learned a lot of information from reading all your posts, but I can't decide Both mods seem to have their pros and cons.... I'm ready for my next performance mod... I already have a CAI, SCT xcal2 93 tune and flowmaster exhaust... Which MOD would you do next, the gears or the pulleys? Also, has anyone had any problems with either of these MODS?

I'm at the same stage that you're at, and I'm leaning more towards gears for sure. I haven't pulled the trigger yet only because I'm alittle worried about how they would affect my warranty if something happened to the drivetrain. I consider gears a permanent modification since I can't install/exchange them myself. I can R&R the cai, axle-back, and tuner easily and could do the same with the pullies, but not the gears if I needed to.

This is just my opinion though.......plenty of people here will remind me that gears shouldn't cause warrenty concerns unless they were directly related to the warranty issue. But for me with the car only having 2500 miles on it now, I'm gonna play it safe for a while longer.

i agree with everyone else...gears. best bang for the buck sans nitrous. it also lays the groundwork for any future modifications (blower, ported heads, etc).

gears were the 2nd thing i did to my car, after the C&L, and even then, the only reason i did that was because i knew i was gonna need a retune, so i got the cold air with the predator so i could change the speedo after the gears.

id say get the gears first, then do the pullies afterwards.

If you want your car really quick, get the gears. I did and could not be happier. I am going to get pullies next. I have had no issues with the gears at all.

Get the gears first. Doesn't matter you're going to end up buying both anyway

Well, I agree with pretty much everyone that has responded so far...get both.
Having said that, I am curious as to what you have understood the "cons" of getting UDPs are? Or gears for that matter...

cons for gears is 3 mpg less fuel economy and pullys....if you have a 10,000 watt stereo its slows down that alternator too much if you like bumping it at idle?

Hardly a deal breaker. Easily enough compensated for by slight alteration in driving habits in city driving. Kind of like the "oh no gas went up $0.05 this week I need a 87 octaine tune" panic ( in my opinion )

It's a sports car that is getting gears put in it to make it quicker...why would you sit around at idle listening to the stereo? Besides, that is what large caps are for.

Thanks guys for all your input... The 4.10 gears are what I was leaning towards but just wanted to make sure... As for the cons, I was just concerned with rear end noise mostly... not gas mileage... H e l l , if gas mileage bothered me, I would have bought a Honda. Couple other questions if you guys don't mind... 1) Is there a preference as to who makes the gears? 2) What should I expect to pay for both the gears and installation? Thanks again and HAPPY NEW YEAR! Be safe...

I have heard nothing but good about FRPP gears. As for price, I was quoted $425 for parts and labor from the performance shop I deal with.

I would do the gears for sure and unless you plan a lot of drag strip time I would forget about the pulleys. Cost per HR gain ratio is out of sight and I want my AC to work at full capacity.

Another vote for 4.10s. And stick with FRPP if you can.

Frpp is the way to go. These have shown the least problems with whine. You should be able to get the gears and have them installed for under $500.

Use only FRPP gears. And I may as well get it started, are you set on 4.10s or are you thinking about 4.30's too?

Another vote for the FRPP 4.10's. My first set of 4.10's were Precisions and they howled badly. The FRPP's are nearly silent. I'm still tossing around the idea of UDP's.

The 4.10's are a blast. Do it!

Huh? OK fine, the cost of UDPs has gone up ( go figure ) but they are still pretty reasonable in the HP to $$ ratio. I got a solid 10hp (shown on a dyno with pre and post pulls by the shop that installed them ) from my Steeda UPDs and at the time that i bought them they were only $225. OK fine, now they are $300, that is still like $30 per HP. darn sight better than $499 for 1HP that you get with a throttle body! And as for A/C. I live in Dallas. Trust me, I would do NOTHING to my vehicle that would affect the way the A/C works. UDPs are not going to affect your A/C or your alternator unless you are sitting with the car idling for long periods of time.
