I had my FRPP 4:10 gears installed today and they are howling. :bang: More when I decelerate but there is some while I am driving too. It goes back into the shop tomorrow for round 2. I know one thing for sure, when they get them set up right I am going to like them.
Does anyone know the specs that their gears were installed at?

Sorry, I don't know the specs. You're right about the fact you'll love them though!

I sent you the entire section out of the service manual for the 8.8 differential and the instruction sheet for FRPP 4.10s
That should be everything. Print it all out and bring it to them.

Thanks Dustin, I'll take it in to them in the morning. They can call the Ford hotline and talk to a tech if they get really stumped. That is if they haven't been layed off!

This makes me wonder what the ratio is for people who have done gear swaps. no-howling to howling. seems to me hardly anybody's install is right the first time around.
It seems to me either
1.) gears are about darn near impossible to install with out a howling
noise
or
2.) there are a lot of shops out there that are guessing and don't know what they are doing
This really kind of stinks because I want 4.10's in mine, but don't want to pay out the pooper to get the install right.

This kind of re-inforces my second point in the above post.
It's cool that you've done that for him but..............You shouldn't have to be bringing in service manuals for these guys (installers).
If you pay a shop to install gears they better dang well no what the heck they are doing. :nono:
Hope everything works out for ya Rich
BTW charge shop some cash for the instructions or have them knock some cash of your installation price.

They quoted me 4 hours to do the job and the owner said bring her back tomorrow because you aren't paying until we get it right. We'll see?

It sounds like they intend on taking care of the problem. Good luck tomorrow!

I to take my car back 3 seperate times to to get them right (FRPP 4.10 gears). When I say 'right', they still howl on decel but nothing too bad. On the second time they even had on of the top Ford techs in the shop at the time and he couldn't figure it out either. Specs were dead on. Eventually we came to the conclusion carrier was slightly off (from the factory) which I think is what is causing the problem for most people. On the 2nd set of gears they tried, they fit with my carrier a little better which is why the howl wasn't as bad.

When I dropped my gears off for installation I was meant to pick it up that day but they wouldn't give me back the car because the gears sounded terrible (like a boat sinking). So they re-installed them..got them right and price was the same. They seem to be a challenge for even the best shops...

Let us know how the reinstall goes. I had the same problem on my 90 LX when I had the gears swapped out. The first shop that did it didn't install them right and I had major howling/chattering. Brought it to another shop that I was told should be the only ones in the area to ever touch gears and sure enough, he pointed out all of the problems the other guys did. He reinstalled the gears and no problems after that. I am going to get some 4:10 gears installed as well. Just have to wait a bit.

My first set of 4.10's were Precisions (generally regarded as a good product), had a perfect contact pattern sounded like a hovercraft from 45-65.
2nd set were FRPP, also showed a perfect pattern and are nearly silent. My installer at Md. Performance Center is top notch and says he normally has very good results with the Precisions and tried the FRPP based on what I told him about results that I read about here. If the FRPP's had howled, I was going back to stock. Luckily they didn't and I'm having a blast with the 4.10's.
Rich, I think it's admirable that your installer is vowing to make it right. I wish you luck!

I just got my car back from the shop and they are PERFECT! I took the install sheet that Dustin emailed to me and they called the Ford service hotline and got it right. The orginial quote was for 4 hours at $75 per hour so $300. The shop spent approximate 8 hours on the car and the price was still the same. I gave the owner (small shop) a $100 tip.
BTW Robert (the Owner) said bring it back in 500 miles and he would change out the gear oil and not charge me for the labor!

Now go out and stomp on it in first gear and tell me if those Nitto's of yours will hook up.

I have NT450 275/50-17s and I can roast them. I'm sure he can light up the 255s!!
