Chris,

I also have 4.10's and my gas mileage isn't too good at the moment. However, I'm still on the "gear honeymoon" and drive like a freak. I did the JLT CAI, XCAL2 93 tune and the gears at the same time and the difference is huge, especially through 1st + 2nd gears. No more low rpm "flat spot" and if you can hook up, you are sure to be quicker in the 1/4.

I'm only 20 minutes or so from you and if you want we can meet up and go for a spin. I'm always looking for a reason to drive it!
Where did you get your gears installed? I just got off the phone with JPC racing in Glen Burnie and they quoted me $320 for the install. Is that a fair price or should I shop around a bit?

I got mine done at Maryland Performance Center in Gaithersburg. Sad to say, great to work with, but I can't recommend them for the gear swap. Not yet anyway. Mine are whining loudly from 45-65 mph and I'm getting a vibration on coast down at the same speeds. They've re-checked the backlash and he says it's right, and I want to believe him. Really I do. He's telling me that my carrier may be the culprit as my backlash readings range from .007 - .011. I'm now waiting on a new set so we can do this all over again. He wants to try the Ford Racing gear instead of the Precision. Maybe it'll make a difference, maybe not. I do know this - I've had it with the noise. Luckily it's not my daily driver or I'd be postal by now. If it doesn't turn out right this time, I'll be looking for someone too.

Looking around, I don't think I've seen anyone pay more. Then again, I got a bonus hovercraft in the trunk for this price!

Here's what I paid:

Rear Axle kit - $122.95
9" solid spacer 14.95
Gasket 6.95
Amsoil lube 29.85
Gears 209.00

Labor $325.00

Grand total $693.75

To all of you that went with the 4.10s, is this an easy mod to do or is it something you'd be better off paying someone to do? If any of you have instructions and could post them it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
OD
So far, that is the only mod (beside window tinting) that I paid to have done for me. I paid JBA Racing about $620 for the swap (parts and labor). Worth every penny... perfect performance, no noise.

There are times I am happy to live in the Midwest. The cost to install my Ford Racing gears was $150.00. My mileage is about 15 MPG around town.

Why so many parts? I have swapped out gears before and only ever needed the gears themselves.

I plan on putting 4:10's in my car but why did you need the rear axle kit and 9" spacer?

Good questions, John. I'm thinking there are two possible answers.

1) He is very thorough and wants to eliminate potential problems by
starting fresh.

2) He's trying to make as much money off me as is humanly possible . :notnice:

He says the former, but that's open to debate at this point seeing that my gears make noise.

When I called to get a quote, he gave me 3 prices...
1) $189 for the motive gears
2) $89 for the "install package"
3) $320 for the labor

he rattled off what was included in the "install package" but I don't remember what he said.

Install should not run you more than $150. Parts and labor can vary. i have always bought my gears from www.gefracing.com. But their prices have gone up a bit since steel prices are going up.

But nobody should be paying $320 for labor alone. Thats just rediculous.

How long should it take for the entire install process from start to finish?

I totally agree Greg, but unfortunately that's the norm around here. Services are pricey in these parts. Both of my quotes were around the same.

Chris, you'll love the gears. It's a good investment if done right. Go for it and keep us posted. I may need your guy if mine can't make mine right.
