4.0 to 4.6

Anyone installed a 4.6L in place of a 4.0L? My engine will not fire up via the ignition. If so what issues did you encounter and what was the corrective action taken? After my upgrade I have installed an engine harness and pcm out of a 4.6L. Is it possible to flash this pcm from another mustang to be compatible? I’ve been told different answers. Has anyone dealt with this issue?

Yes, it's been done. Several times. 5.0 Coyotes too. There's plenty of pitfalls and methods involved in doing it, and no two ways are 'right'.

In this case, it sounds like you've already done a 'donor car' swap, and so it seems that you're down to the computers vs the VIN vs the scantools vs the legalities involved... You've bitten off quite a bit doing this without knowing what the endgame looks like, I'm sorry to say. It's not like the old days when computers didn't control things like they do now...

The computers involved, being the PCM (ECM), SJB, Instrument cluster, all have to be programmed to talk with each other. This would be why you're not getting it to start, on the face of it anyway. And yes, they could be reprogrammed (ostensibly), with a Ford scan tool. There may be another scan tool out there that can do the Ford tricks too.

HOWEVER... your VIN number for that literally says "V6" in it. That may be the downfall to this project. Your car would have to be a lie. The VIN on the car vs the engine in it do not match, and therefore it may be that Ford or some other shop may refuse to play the game. This alone is the better reason to get a GT and not try to convert the car.

Of course, different locations, different rules... And even different engine management systems can be had, like a Holley or Adaptronics or such... you could frankenmod the car, but that's getting into a 'buy a car' territory thing, ya ask me. Also, the GT is already set up in every other way (brakes, axle, driveshaft, etc) which I'm sure you swapped over... right?

So... yeah, there ya go. You can, but... maybe you shouldn't. Unless you just *gotta*. Which makes me ask, what's the plan, man? Drag car? Track car? Or upgrading the daily for grins? Inquiring minds like mine wanna know...
