3rd gear missing

I have a Steeda tri-ax shifter and I am having a problem. A few weeks ago I went to the track for some 1/4 mile runs and I was power shifting into third. On 2 of my runs, I missed 3rd gear. When I tried to shift it just wouldn't go in, it was like trying to shift into a brick wall. Of course I smacked the rev limiter and after the second occurance I gave up on power shifting.
Now I am noticing resistance going into 3rd while every day driving. When I shift, it slips out of 2nd fine and then right when I start slipping into 3rd it feels kind of like I have to push though spot where it locks up before it goes fully into gear.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help.
Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, I was getting 13.8's in the 1/4 mile.

And I thought I was the only one blowing 3rd gear shifts. I have lost count of how many times I've missed and banged off the limiter. The stock shifter isn't stellar, but I'm thinking operator error over here. Maybe someone could swing by and teach me to shift!

LOL Yeah dont buy a used Mustang From anyone here @ TMS. !!!! See this Transmission has had issues with shifting from everyone, Well almost everyone. I have had problems with grinding gears into second and if you dont shift right on the money into 3rd you will hit a brick wall. But my 2 - 3 shifts are usually my best when power shifting. I have to granny shift 1 - 2 power 2 - 3 power 3 - 4 and on ocasion have power shifted 4 - 5. But that is when im doing 140 and need another gear. But point being this transmission isnt that great.

I posted about this in another thread but from what I have learned from the TREMEC representatives at the races there is an inherent problem with shifting the 3650 at high rpm's with the hydraulic clutch and it concerns timing issues. They informed me that it is magnified by power shifting. My wife and I have been granny shifting the car since day one. TREMEC says that there is a fix for this problem but it is off label and can be completed by a transmission/clutch specialist by "drilling" some orphices in the factory clutch assembly. I personally feel that this is a problem that Ford and Tremec are not interested in spending time on fixing because it doesn't malfunction under normal street driving conditions. If you want to power shift then be prepared to warranty or buy parts, if you want it to be right then look into a different trans for your Mustang. Otherwise don't hold your breath that the problem will go away, it won't.

Its actually funny that all you guys are 5-speed GTs here, and I'm an auto who's experienced a similar thing:
Whenever im driving using the 1-2-3-D, I encounter a problem with 3rd gear also. I'll start to go, let off the gas, shift from 1-2, gas again, let off, shift from 2-3, and at this point one of two things usually happens:
#1- it feels like the gear ISNT going into place or something....the car "feels" like its free-revving, then all of a sudden catches 3rd gear
OR
#2- the revs will drop BELOW the actual 3rd gear RPM, stay for a second, and then catch gear with a loud thump.
So I, with an auto, am also experiencing 2-3 shift problems. Any connections?

you will definately break something if you let off the gas when manually shifting your automatic.
You need to keep your foot in it all times and shift 200 rpms just under where you want it to shift. due to the delay in the transmission it will shift right where you want it if you aim for 200 rpms under that RPM.

Hmm, I power shift mine all the time and never have a problem. Ive found that if you arent deliberate on the 1-2 shift while powershifting, it will tend to want grind going in. When I power shift , I clutch at 6 grand, the motor picks up about 300 rpms, and it'll go right in.
I have a buddy with a 92 that has a T5, and that thing is a real pig to shift !! I'll take the 3650 over a T5 any day !

I have had the 2-3rd gear happen to me a couple times, and my friends look at me like i dont know how to shift. Hopefully with my new hurst that will be a thing of the past.
I thought that continuous manual shifting an automatic was one of the worst things to do to a regular automatic. Wears it out quickly or no?

I am not for sure if this is related or not but my 05 was having dificulties going into 3rd and was also having the grinding noise as explained in the tsb ,before i knew about the tsb i just wrote it off as it being new and needing broke in !!so i took in and they done the tsb on it with the sync. and rev. gear and when i got it back it helped a little with the 3rd gear issue not much but then it would shudder hard in 2nd under heavy exceleration so i took it back again and instead of rebuilding again they put a whole new trainy in and it feels like a completely different model ,this thing shifts with the best now !!!so maybe tremec had a bad run of parts but what ever it is mine is working great now!!! sorry for the long winded post just had to tell my story!!
