Hey guys, at this time there are NO Cams ready for us. So, here is the deal, I have found a shop that will buy the stock cams form Ford, grind them and put them in the engine.

Cost:

2 cams @ $150 = $300
2 grind @ $150 = $300
New springs = $300
Labor = $1000
total = ~ $2000

All for about 25hp and a small lope.

Would you do it ?

i dunno. not right now at least. i personally think i'm going to stay away from serious engine mods for a while. i would like a lil' lope, but i think the cost and the nature of it are going to keep me away for now.

The cam is probably the most important single piece in an engine that will determine HP. I would hope that you would get a lot more then 25HP for 2K.

I would wait till Ford Racing or a name brand cam builder offers some grinds. If I couldn't get 50-100HP from a cam change I wouldn't do it.

Brian, if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket then why don't you get a supercharger?

Since I am still learning about mods, I read somewhere that you shouldn't pay more than $20/hp. This would be about $80/hp.

Does that $20/hp pertain to bolt ons only?

Definately wait. The Wipple will be out in a couple of months. Maybe by then more options will come along from the reputable cam companies. I don't think I would be able to trust a cam regrind from anyone, and without any testing how would they know which grind would be most optimal for your 05 Pony. If you decided for some reason to do it, save the $1000 bucks and do it yourself and get a little hands on in your car besides the steering wheel. You'll learn, save money and be prouder of your upgrade. My $.02

I also would suggest we wait for a major player to put out a cam. They have the facilities and technology to squeez out every last drop of horsepower. I'll be watching Comp cams closely.

I too have been struggling to decide what mods to buy to get the best "bang for the buck" I would hate to invest a lot of money in a CAI, cams, headers etc. when I could just install the "Whipple SC" and then just some nice mufflers for sound.

I just don't know which way to go????? Spend at least 5K for the SC, but you would gain about 100-150 HP, or buy CAI, underdrive pullies, headers, exhaust etc., and only get 50 or less HP for about 2K or more...then what more could you do and how much more would you have to spend to equal the 50-100 more HP you would need to match the SC??

Decisions, decisions!!

I was fortunate to find a local race shop a couple days ago, who specializes in Mustangs!! (they just relocated to my area) I called them and they are anxious to get to work on my '05. I need to make some decisions, let the snow melt, then drop her off!!

Well for me I more so like the NA, hot rod type of engine. High compression, lopping Cam(s), low gears, old school muscle car. To me a turbo or supercharger defeats the muscle for me. I will probably pass of the turbo and supoercharger and opt for cams, pop-ups, ported heads, headers and a tune.

Then I will go with a Turbo

Maybe you should consider a 5.0 Cammer?

I know there is improvement to be gained from porting the heads. I'd price a set of heads from Ford, and have them ported if you wanted to stay naturally aspirated. I'd love to hear an 05 with a small lope. It would sound great, and even better when you put your foot into it.

I want to keep the 05 Stang Gt engine - just add some "bad-hiney" to it

I believe whipple is not even testing the SC on auto trannys yet.

If you are wanting to do mods to the internals of the engine... I would definitely wait for the correct aftermarket engine parts to become available, else you would be better off putting a different engine in the car to get the HP gains you are wanting. Having a shop custom build internal parts is a risky venture, you may end up having to replace the engine anyway if these shops screws up the custom built part. IMPO

Then you will have to wait. At this time I have seen updates for Crower making cams for the 3V. Give it some time folks. All that you will need is on its way. Heads, cams, and maybe an upper intake. Jeez, there is only one company so far that has made headers (that I know of). You must have patience everyone. This car has been out approx 2 months and everyone wants the world as far as mods for it. For myself I am more than likely staying N/A. But waiting to do the major mods AFTER the 3/36 is up. P/P heads, stage I or II cams, headers, gears, pullies, new intake, cai, tune, suspension, brakes, and wheels. AND then maybe some stripes!

I want it all now too but I am learning, especially trying to teach my son, to have patience. It will be fun and a learning experience to see what products work the best by everyone else making the expensive mistakes. For the first few years I will try to enjoy what I have and be thankful for that.

you're not going to be able to get as big of a hp gain for the money of an S/C.... but you have to get an efficient compressor.... like a Whipple or KB... they run screw types. Your next best bet will be a centrifugal blower.... I woun't use a roots... they just aren't efficient enough to warrant the expense. Anyways... to build an engine that will give you another 150 hp, whether you deck the heads and do a valve job, port the heads, rebuild the bottom end, balance, grind cams, and/or change the intake manifold.... you're going to spend more than $5000 to get it done and wind up with more hp.
I'm definitly going with a blower.
