yep i got owned by a bmw...
so i was going home from work and a bmw sedan the model right before this new one pulls up and we go at it 3 times and he managed to get me all 3 times dam i still cant belive it but i know that i just have a v6 but still do u guys think it was a 328 or 330 im not a beamer guy so i dont know.
It's all good.. It happens.. My brother beat up on an S197 GT driver in a road race with his 06 Impala SS, because the man can flat out drive. But he can't beat me.
Don't sweat it man. I don't care how many cylinders you have, you're gonna take some and give some. That day just wasn't YOUR day...
Yeah, my dad had a 328 before he got a Mustang. Those things are pretty quick off the line. Don't let it get you though.
Just think of it this way, when you need something simple done, mechanically, it won't cost you an arm and a leg to get it fixed.

just throwing this out there
coming back from fort benning on the 40E i see a bimmer coming from behind preety quick so i get in the right lane to let them pass.as he pulls a bit in front i see it's a 335I so i say **** it pull up next to him and i already see his girl diggin my car. we are both crusin at about 90 when we both go at it. I couldn't belive it at about 140 i was so far ahead of him that i just let off. as he comes up beside me i see he was shocked and with his girl laughing at him,i'm sure that didnt help. after that we were both crusing the whole way at about 90. we both had solo S2's. anyway that's my story for today
hmmm really? the 335i has a TT V6 with 306hp and it's one of the best engines in the world. i kinda wondered who would win...thanks for the story Touring.
As for you Salsa, lol, I think it was a 328i with 240hp. Because you said he olny managed to get you, if it were a 335i, i'm pretty sure he would have smoked you each time.
But look on the bright side...you have a mustang

Not a bad car, or a bad engine, but I think there are about 50 motors above the 335i I can think about that are more interesting and exciting. It takes a little more than a small undertuned straight 6 with a couple turbos to get my heart thumping, but to each his own.
And yes, I said undertuned. BMW left a whole lot on the dyno room floor I believe.
Where's the stretch? It really is one of the best mass produced motors around. "Interesting" and "exciting" are hardly the only two (or even close to being the most important two) criterion. The thing is smooth, powerful, torquey as all get out, flat power delivery, relatively fuel efficient, rev-willing, and makes some good noises when booted.

I love it.
Arguably, a SN197 GT can handle a BMW [really any one of them] in a quick acceleration run. But at high speeds - 100 mph plus - 125 mph plus - it's a total mismatch.
You can drive a BMW with one hand, and the cruise on at 140 mph no problem. I've done it. Get your GT up to 110 mph plus - and you've got two hands glued to wheel, and you're hoping your hood doesn't pop up. There is no comparison - they are two different vehicles.
All the Bimmer sixes are actually straight sixes, not V6s -- small point, but that's one reason they're sooooo smooth.
IIRC, the 328s had about 200 some hp while the 330s had 225 hp. The bimmers motors are actually pretty torquey for their size and often accelerate faster than one might think given their engine size and ratings.
I would imagine either a 328/300 would take a V6 Stang -- not by a whole lot, but would do it. Handling and braking performance -- stock -- not even close, but then, neither is the price (you gets whatcha paid for).
Make sure the 3 series Bimmer wasn't an M3 -- they don't look that different from a standard coupe -- as they would obliterate a V6 Stang and even take a stock GT by a small bit, as you'd expect for a car with 330 hp. The handling and braking, and price, discrepancies would be even greater yet.
Watch out for the twin turbo 335is, they are a bit underrated and are nearly as fast as an M3. Their Achilles heel seems to be that they're hot running motors and can suffer from heat buildup, whereupon the ECU dials back boost and performance markedly. Lesson, race againt these on 98-degree August days.

Acceleration, not so much. In a pure acceleration run between a current generation M3 and a S197 Mustang GT, it's a horse race (no pun intended), with the victory going to the more experienced driver.
The M3 makes 333 horsepower at 7900 rpm - just below its 8000 redline - but only 262 ft lbs of torque at 4900 rpm. So mid-range and top end are its strengths. But mid-range on the Mustang is very strong as well, and I would expect the GT to handily dispatch an M3 in a 60 to 90 MPH acceleration run.
