What will it take for Mustang GT to beat the GTO?
Having a friendly debate at work, and wanted to get your opinion.
So what would it take for a street race setting, for the '05 Mustang GT to beat the '05 GTO. Say both are manuals for the sake of argument.
( No, I have no plans on any race with any car including the GTO). A person in the building next to us just bought one, so the conversation started!
THanks!!

An ever-so-slightly better driver in the mustang.
When I went to the strip a couple months ago, there were two '05 6.2L GTOs there, and they were running worse times than the 2 GTs, both of which were stock. However, with a good driver behind the wheel, I imagine the GTO would win, though not by much at all.

I thought that even though the GTO has more horsepower, that the Mustang GT still had a much better 0-60 time. I know the mustang is lacking on the 1/4 mile but it's quicker off the start.

Didnt someone on these boards take a stock 05 gt to a 13.27 run or something like that with just tires? Thats right around stock GTO 6 speed territory. But with just intake, exhaust, and a tune im sure the average person could stay even.

The Best Heads up comparison was done by Car & Driver in their Jan 2005 Issue.
The GTO @ 400hp 440 ft-lb of torque
0-60 = 4.8
1/4 Mile = 13.3 @ 107mph
The 05 GT @ 300hp 320 ft-lb of torque
0-60=5.1
1/4 Mile = 13.8 @ 103mph
As you can see, the preformance difference is easly within the Driver's skill Make or break point.
I suspect that a CAI+TUNE will put the 05 GT ahead assuming that both are good drivers....
Added With the edit:
Let me put it this way. If you add enough go fast parts to the Mustang to equal the price difference between the two cars, the Mustang will easly win... ( This is the point that will irritate the GTO owner the most )

and i dont know if thats a great review, because they got a good time for the gto, and a bad (¼ mile) time for the mustang.
Sorry, I fat fingered the 440 number, the 400Ft-Lb is correct....
The GTO stock for stock is a little faster, but considering that it is 3-4K more expensive and has 400hp, it should be significantly faster and it is not....
Add 2-3K to the Mustang and it would not even be a race.....
