At least the M3 is a sportscar.

I love the Mustang, but the E46 is one of the finest automobiles ever made.

Reminds me of that old joke: "What's the difference between a BMW and a porcupine?"

Have you ever driven an M3? There is a whole lot more to those cars than their badge.

Everyone watch closely, this discussion will determine who among us is a real car enthusiast and which of us are scared and ignorant of those strange "other" cars everyone seems to be talking about.
"What, not a Mustang??? Well,i've never heard of such a thing..........uhhhhhhh,i've never driven one and i uh don't know anyone who actually has one,so i'm going to say, without any knowledge of this car,i'm going to say it's crap and it's owners are gay.......whew,my insecurity and total lack of any knowlegde outside of my tiny world of mustangs almost made itself known."
The BMW E46 M3 is one of the greatest cars of the last decade. If you were to race one,you might have a straight line shot at a knuckle dragging quarter-mile race.......MIGHT. But as you know, sometimes cars actually, umm, what's the word, turn. Stay away from them in the twisties, they don't call them Ultimate driving machines for nothing.

Aren't those the ones with the "legendary in-line 6"?

There always going to be someone bigger, faster, etc...

Just drive your Mustang and enjoy it. That and remember you paid sub 30k and the Beemer is probably +50K. Apples and oranges right?

i'd take the stang.... much easier to drive, and is a lot more unique. and owners arent ******.

and the fact that is costs less than half as much as the m3, but with a few mods can keep up with if not be faster than the m3

dude there is nothing wrong with bmw or mercedes or whatever other car owners. we had a bmw for 15 years and we just bought another one. we also have the 05 stang. the owners of these cars always seemed nice to me. an owner of the benz v12 gave me a thumbs up one day.

Excellent car. In a straight line, the M3 would take a Stang by a little. In the twisties, no contest. Granted, you pay a lot more, but you do get a lot more.

Fantastic 3.2 straight six, halfway to being an out and out race motor. Not quite as torquey down low as the big 4.6 V8, but revs so willingly, eagerly and smoothly that that's no detriment to driving enjoyment, especially with a great six speed. Steering, suspension and brakes are simply much better than the Stang, period.

Probably a more even comparison would be with the GT500, both being around the $50K mark. GT500 would easily take the M3 on the straights but throw a couple backroads into the comparison and the M3 would likely shine. GT500 is much more of an old school power cruiser, drag strip car much like the original whereas the M3 is a far more balanced and serious overall sports machine.

As for the owners, well, that says more for the owners than the cars and there's certainly no lack of jerks who drive Mustangs or any other car.

I will share a story, my boss's secretary was out shopping and she has a Nissan Maxima, nothing over the top but she keeps it nice. She parks next to a guy with a brand new BMW, she comes out later and finds the guy checking all his

doors and he says "is this your car?" she tells him yes and he starts going ape **** on her for parking next to him (there is no damage done to his car) saying "you parked way to close to me, do you know what I paid for this?" she told him she realizes that the car is expensive and he started going on and on about how much it would cost to fix damage done and blah....blah...blah. *****.

On top of that he was parked close to the store entrance, everyone knows that the closer you park the greater the risk of something happening. I would always park my stang way out in the lot, I will walk to prevent damage. So he not only yelled at her for doing nothing wrong but for parking next to him! If you don't want tons of cars around you park far away.

Still the M3 is a great performing car, and I would have to agree that it would edge out the win. Still honestly I have still encountered more jerks driving rice rockets then any other cars, I guess dumping thousands into a 2 door POS honda will make anyone angry and rude

here's my problem with this debate..snobbery.

i did a 3yr lease on an m3. loved it. simply one of the finest cars ever bar none. nothing more to say than that.

i now own an '07 mustang gt. love it to death. thats a true love of cars. to some of my friends my mustang was a step down. despite what they say, they are not car guys. to say atleast the m3 is a sportcar is a little snobbish. they're both awesome.

yes the m3 is way more refined and better built and feels way more sophisticated. but you know what? mine stickered for almost $60k. bought my mustang now for about $30k. that is two mustangs. twice the price. i would hope that the m3 does what it does for twice the price. spend an extra $10k on the mustang and you'll have something as thoroughly entertaining. EVO COTY 2005 issue 87, they actually compared the m3 cs and a roush mustang. read that and you'll not walk away saying atleast the m3 is a sportscar.

and as far as it being a sportscar... i actually referred to mine as a sportscar every now and then and some people would disagree, laugh even. granted they were not always what i would consider enthusiasts but still. and finally, about comparing cars in different price segments.. there's more than a few reviews out there comparing the m3 to a 911. all of them say that the m3, while great, is way out of its league. yet i would never say atleast the 911 is a sportscar. its just the wrong attitude.

Theyre both great cars, anyone who says differently isnt an enthusiast. Theyve got different strengths cause theyre built for different markets.

I would argue spending $2K (CAI + Predator tune) will give you a car as thoroughly entertaining as the current I6 M3.

Recognizing the distinction between a sportscar (M3) and musclecar ('Stang) isn't snobbish.
