I have been saving for the last year for a Mustang GT but the other day I took a test drive in the new Charger R/T. The car was VERY big, I'm driving a Ford Probe GT right now. But with the HEMI the thing really moved. I didn't have enough time to take a Mustang test drive back-to-back (probably couldn't find a GT anyways around here), but was wondering if anyone else has checked out the car. Looks like it will be a few thousand more but the two extra doors have some advantages.

Was just hoping some more experienced folks out there have some insights into comparing these two.

Still leaning towards the Stang, probably spring 06 if everything tracks on the budget-o-meter.

There's a lot of back-and-forth about the Charger vs. the Mustang. Many folks poo-poo the Dodge because of the two additional doors.

I would probably like the Charger except for one thing, no manual transmission. That's the decider for me. I did get to drive a '69 Charger with a 318 that my brother owned.

Plus I really would rather have a Mustang.

My thought on that is "What Charger". I would not call that thing a Charger. Do some google searches and you'll see what I mean.

It reminded me of when Chevy brought back the Nova (4 cylinder, no hp) and it totally degraded the Nova name.

The only thing the new Charger has that resembles the old charger is hp.

Regarding racing the new Charger, it would be very, very close - but the Mustang will win.

"The Dodge Charger SRT8, with its 425 horsepower (420 lb-ft) 6.1 liter Hemi, 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds, quarter-mile time in the 13-second range and braking distance from 60-0 mph in approximately 110 feet."

That quote is from Dodge and if I recall correctly, the actual numbers were something like 0-60 in 5.3, 1/4 mile in 13.6.

We have a forum named "Which is Better" with a subtitle "All Car vs. Car Topics." I guess this doesn't fit in there? Also asking about which is better on a Mustang forum, wonder what kind of result you'll get. Voted Mustang GT, didn't see that coming did you?

I HOPE NOBODY GETS OFFENDED BUT THE DODGE LOOKS TOO MUCH LIKE THE OTHERS CARS JUST LIKE THE GTO. IT IS THE SAME OLD THING. FORD REALLY GOT THE RIGHT IDEA WITH THE NEW MUSTANG. IT'S A WINNER ALL THE WAY. ALSO FORD IS DETICATED TO THE AFTERMARKET TO IMPROVE ON WHAT NEEDS LITTLE IMPROVEMENT. I ALSO THINK YOU WILL FIND THE PERFORMANCE SPECS. AREN'T TOO MUCH DIFFERENT EITHER.

ok aside from them turning the charger into a 4 door sedan and other opinions anyone might have on looks I think the question at hand is about the performance versus that of the GT...I drive a GT and I took a spin in the Charger the other day. The guys at the local Dodge dealership know me by know and let me try all their vehicles including the SRT10s. The area is perfect for test drives too, lots of straight aways and perfect turns and winding roads and a freeway so you can get it all in and the dealerships pretty much let you in fact with the high end cars they want you to so that you can see the performance so as you dont go overboard.

Anyway my impressions are that it is a quick well handling car for a SEDAN. I am always pleased with the Dodge products with the exception of the latest Durango that thing blows...the previous one is much better. My girlfriend has the previous RT version with the Shelby package and its sweet she also has a Magnum RT also nice. Back to the charger while it has a lot of pick me up and go and launches quit nicely and handles nicely around turns, its top end also doesnt give up on you quickly like a lot of sedans the fact remains if you are going to compare it to the Mustang GT you cant, the GT is a sports car and the difference shows I can put my car into tight turns at higher speeds and she will grip and carve that turn like butter compared to the Charger and its larger mass...the back end comes out on you easier and I found myself having to brake harder going into the turns to get to a slower speed to take it tight, but coming out of it it does move quickly (could also be that I am not use to driving it on a daily basis as I do my car.) It stops better than the Magnum but about as well as the 300C (makes sense they are essentially the same car) and the steering remains responsive when you slam on the brakes but it does take a longer time to come to a stop than the GT. Acceleration isnt as quick as the GT and at highspeeds on the freeway it doesnt have a lot of highend torque as does the GT (in camparison) it slows its acceleration quit a bit once you get to the 90-100mph mark where as with my GT I dont feel it unitl I get into the 120 range (yes I have done it) this is not to say that either car stops accelerating but they rate at which they do is slowed at these points. I do feel a bit safer in the charger at the higher speeds as it feels like you are not moving that fast, but again that is what a sports car is designed to feel like like your moving fast. And finally in the winding roads the Charger seems to be a bit awkward and ungraceful through the turns in camparison to the GT.

I should say that my GT is a stick and the charger was an auto, they didnt have a stick. Overall I was happy with the Charger for a SEDAN, but I want a sports car and prefer the GT but I do not think its fair to compare the two, it would be like comparing the GT to a Carrerra GT not the same class. I do believe that the charger will have no problem leading its class though especially after the SRT8 comes out, I would really like to see the Daytona Trim on it though. And anyone who purchases one will be happy with it, I still like the looks of the 300C and Mangnum better but thats my oppinion. And by the way the charger retailed as it sat on the lot for about 32000 MSRP and had a 5000 markup. Not worth the markup IMO, no car is but the Stang was more worth it if you paid for it.

I think he just wanted oppinions on the camparison of performance....the looks difference is obvious and everyone has their own taste, it seems he likes the 4 door idea...and as far as the interior and features are concerned they are pretty similar...both nice...but I like the retro look of the stang much better

I have been taking a serious look at the new Dodge Charger. I may have an oppertunity to get one as a company vehicle. The company requires you to have a 4 door ( and prefer a domestic ) and the charger is certianly big and roomy enough to haul 5 comfortabley...

I actually like the looks of the car. I do not like it as well as the 05 mustang, but I think it look better than any of the other 4 door sport sedans out there.

I think that the new charger is going to get a lot of converts fron the big BMW & Mercedies, Lexus, etc... more that it will fromt Mustang fans. It really is more of a hipo luxury leaning sedan than a sporty coup.

However, It would ride better and be more quite ( less road & Tire noise ) than the Mustang. I think if I had kids to haul around, the charger would be a much better choice than the mustang.

I really hope I get this job ( aslo a great job ) so I can play with both....

P.S. I love the song choice on their video on their SRT8 site. "Now your messing with a Sone of a b...."

I agree with a lot of you, the reason I'm getting the '05-06 Mustang is because it looks like the one I had. I had a '67 Convertible and I'm buying one so I can drive it every day. If the new Chargers look like the '60s I'd buy that instead (Mainly because of that orange one). But since they look nothing like them so I screw them.

I did and you're right. I found this charger on google and it looks nothing like the new Charger.

If I was getting a new:
4-door sedan? The 300 and the Charger would be up there
Station wagon? Magnum
Sporty Car? Mustang

The only 4door I would consider would be Vseries CTS.

Your budget is bigger than mine (+50K for a V-Series).

I'd rather spend 10K less on a Chrysler 300C SRT8 (well actually I would buy a GT500 if I was going to spend $40K)

Don't know what year your looking at, but I tihnk they were trying to model it against a 60's charger or something a few years after that. The one you got looks like it came from the 80s(did they even have chargers then?)

This is more of what I think the new Charger should resemble

I'm fortunate enough to have both My wife picked up the Chrysler 300 version in early January, and I picked up the stang late January. Here's how it boils down--what do YOU want to drive? A roomy large car with a big motor, or a sports car? The 300/Charger is first and foremost a roomy full sized sedan with nice appointments. Mostly it's pretty quiet unless you floor it, but after the first week we both sort of cooled off and just enjoyed the cruise between points A and B. Great sound system, useful Nav system, 5 people got plenty of room. We really love the ride.

The Mustang is my daily driver, and I put 80+ miles on it a day. The sound system is...marginal...and I tend to turn it off anyhow just to LISTEN to the exhaust note. Every windy road is a challenge, every onramp a miniversion of the quarter mile, every stop light a chance to vaporize rubber, every Nissan 350Z becomes my b*tch. It's been nearly 6 months and I still don't have the sh** eating grin off my face. But if I want to run to the grocery store and chat with my honey, we take the Chrysler.

If both we're in front of you, and you had to drive it 3 hours a day, which would you choose???

Best of luck!

John
