Mustang beats GTO in motor trend comparison
#4
While I like the Stang better than the GTO, the Mustang handily LOST that comparison. The only reason the Mustang came out by one point is for the categories the editors added that were far too subjective.
Here's the numbers, bold where the Mustang came out on top:
Performance data:
0-60 mph: M - 5.1 / GTO - 4.8
0-100 mph: M - 13.0 / GTO - 11.7
0-130 mph: M - 25.6 / GTO - 19.6
1/4 mile: M - 13.8 @ 103 mph / GTO - 13.3 @ 107 mph
Top speed: M - 147 mph / GTO - 158 mph (governed)
Numbers:
Displacement: M - 281 ci / GTO - 364 ci
Horsepower: M - 300 @ 5,750 / GTO - 400 @ 6,000
Torque: M - 320 @ 4,500 / GTO - 400 @ 4,400
EPA: M - 17 and 25 / GTO - 15 and 27 (estimated)
Weight: M - 3,575 / GTO - 3,787
Car and Driver magazine scores the Mustang GT a point higher than the
GTO. Here's how they broke it down:
Driver comfort (10): M - 9 / GTO - 10
Front-seat space (10): M - 9 / GTO - 10
Ergonomics (10): M - 9 / GTO - 10
Rear-seat comfort (5): M - 4 / GTO - 5
Rear-seat space (5): M - 3 / GTO - 5
Trunk space (5): M - 5 / GTO - 3
Features/Amenities (10): M - 9 / GTO - 10
Fit & Finish (10): M - 9 / GTO - 9
Styling (10): M - 10 / GTO - 8
Value (10): M - 10 / GTO - 8
Engine output (10): M - 8 / GTO - 10
Engine performance (10): M - 8 / GTO - 10
Throttle response (10): M - 9 / GTO - 10
Engine (NHV) (10): M - 9 / GTO - 10
Transmission (10): M -10 / GTO - 7
Vehicle performance (10): M - 10 / GTO - 9
Steering feel (10): M - 7 / GTO - 10
Brake feel (10): M - 9 / GTO - 9
Handling (10): M - 8 / GTO - 9
Ride (10): M - 9 / GTO - 9
Gotta-have-it factor (25): M - 25 / GTO - 18
Fun to drive (25): M - 22 / GTO - 23
Grand total: M - 211 / GTO - 210
From the article: "Pick apart the Mustang's laundry list of simple components, and it would seem to be less of a car than the GTO, but drive the Mustang, and it feels like far more than the sum of its parts. That is the draw of the Mustang: It makes the most of what it has, doesn't suffer for what it doesn't have, charges you less than you expect and beckons you from the showroomuntil you come and take it home."
- - - - -
So essentially, the Mustang got its hiney handed to it, and the reviewers made up a purely subjective category "gotta have it" and gave the Mustang 7 points, letting it squeak by with one. For the price of the GTO it had better perform.
I like the 05 GT way better than the GTO, but performance-wise it just doesn't add up. Now, spend as much in upgrades to the GT as you'll pay for a GTO stock, and you'll have a car that will eat the GTO for breakfast and look a heck of a lot better doing it.

DiamondBlue, you left out two objective categories that the Mustang did win:
(1) Roadholding (skidpad)
(2) Lane Change maneuver
Small victories, I admit, but we'll take 'em.
Ironically, even though the Stang won the two objective handling categories, the editors still handed the handling title to the Goat.

albeit a small victory, i accept it
The Mustang being able to switch lanes faster than the GTO is a great freeway factor....
and, looks wise, the Mustang beats the GTO down, it seems the GTO fell from the ugly tree, and hit every branch on the way down
and, thats with Magazine drivers, im sure with better drivers behind the wheel, the 5 speed manual GT will get Sub- 5 second 1/4 miles and LOW 13s if not high 12s.
4.6 > LS2
its just that simple
Matt

I thought they were testing against the 350hp GTO the 400hp GTO isn't even out yet. I guess since the mustang beat the 04 GTO they had to restest against the GTO with the 100+ hp diff to have a sutable comparison. I say test against a SE Mustang and then see who wins....again

personally-now dont hate me for this- i think the GTO is a pretty nice car. in fact once i get my contract with the 49ers (roughly 2012)
and start collecting cars, i plan on eventually buying one.
***BUT***
i dont think its good as the GTO any other name would have been ok, but the new GTO doesnt live up to its old name. and i think thats the problem most people have with it.
just sayin it how it is

My wifes boss has a 04 gto. A really nice car. The interior space is much better than the stang. He bought the car when it first came out and the dealer put it to him. He paid like 2k over msrp because the dealer said there was going to be a "shortage". lol ...I think they still have the same 04's on the lot for the last year and a half. The car sounds great and nice spacious interior. That's about all I can say about it.
The mustang has much more character and soul. The GTO looks like any other pontiac on the road. It doesn't not look like a sports car IMO.
The mustang is a far better value, has much nicer styling (imo), and was able to take the 04 gto which costs like $8,000 more. I just checked a price on the net for a local dealer. You can get an 05 gto for 35k. You can get a whole lot of mustang for the extra $10,000 you'll pay for the goat.
It's hard to compare 05 with 05. Since the 04 gto and the 05 stang are a little more comparible engine wise. Let's do a comparison when the cobra comes out. B)

a friend of mine has a new 04 GTO and he raced a new 05' mustang both manual. raced three times and everytime, the goat put two or three cars on him. I too read the magazine but i saw the results on the street. so thats what im sticking to. I think both cars are awesome.

The GTO engineering is in no way related to the grand prix. ITS NOT EVEN FROM THE US. This "all american" muscle car was actually imported from GM's australian subsidy Holden (which has been building the monaro[GTO] since around 2000).
Monaro = outstanding car, great value, good looks, wonderful engine, good handling.....BUT NOT A GTO.
GM slandered this classic nameplate and are doing it again with a SEDAN CHARGER.
GM should have imported the monaro, left it the monaro, and marketed it as a M3 competitor, not a muscle car
[RANDOM CAPATILIZATION DENOTES FACT OF PARTICULAR INTEREST :P ]

Two designers lumped a big pile of brown clay on the floor, doused it in gasoline and put it out using two very big ugly knotty sticks and said Good To gO

Posted this on the other GTO thread Think about it
Maybe you boys should try trading in your diapers for a brain. I don't get it? America is finally starting to produce some quality muscle and here you are acting like I don't know what
How many fart can ricers do you see annoying the sh@% out of you? But here you are ragging on an American Muscle Car :bang:
Need I mention that this is the 1st time that a Stock GT can honestly beat an 87 Buick, the point being that maybe the GTO got Ford to get the Mustang in the game
Quite honestly I would love to own a GT and a GTO
You can call me troll or whatever makes you happy but the simple fact is that you should be standing along side of your fellow American muscle car enthusiasts  Yes, its great to compare and compete but do it for the right reasons!
