Uh yeah, but it all comes down to driver...regardless what car it is.
Also, what do you mean quicker?
Off the line, 0-60, 1/4 mile.... one may be a leader in one category, but not another.

Off the line I think, YES. Because it has been proved that the new GT hook up pretty darn good ![Smile](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
But in 0-60 and 1/4 mile the SS will win. The sticker says 325HP but GM underated those cars pretty good. They're putting in stock form 308+rwhp and 105+mph in the quater.
And I think the 05 GT isn't as fast as xpected. It was rumored, and according to magazines xpected #'s, that they were going to put numbers similar to those of the Mach1 (mid to low 13's @ 105+mph).
Until now 13.8's @ 99-102mph are the norm. And we are in the best time (conditions) of the year to put really good numbers, March is the other month to do so out there in the US. Here in Puerto Rico we can race all year, without the problem of snow, etc
Our problem is the humidity, hence for the lower times, compared to other countries. B)

How fast is fast enough???? I bought the GT for an everday driver, and it's plenty fast to get up to speed on the on-ramps and get around cars in a heartbeat (or close to it). The GT is fast enough for me and for what I will ever need it for. The more HP you have, the higher your insurance is gonna be.....and anything more than 300, is overkill...unnecessary...and nothing more than feeding the ego IMO. Now, if the car is something other than an everyday ultimate-commuter car.....this analogy does not apply. B)

From looking at the numbers, assuming both cars are stock, and equal level of driving, it'll be real close for the first 1/8 or so, the closer you get to the 1/4, the more the LS1 will show it's stuff. If you want to start adding in mods, well the LS1 gives good returns for it's bolt ons, but I'm sure there are some people out there that haven't modded much or even taken care of their LS1s as much as they should have.
It'll be one LS1 at a time as to how they come out.
As the old saying goes. There's no replacement for displacement.

The new GT is quicker that any GT in years, but if you look the mph, they're stuck in the 99-102 range (I heard of a 103). Prove of that this new GT hook up really good, but dies @ higher rpm's.
I'm not saying the new GT is slow, is a 13 second car in stock form and that is fast, but they're not putting the numbers and mph's of Mach1's as it were xpected and rumored.
Route for 12's in a 05GT by JDM:
*Dyno tuned with SCT software in house.
* JDM catback exhaust system
* Underdrive pulleys
* QA1 Rear Shocks
* 4:30 Gears
* 17" ET Streets
12's in a Mach1:
-Sticky tires
But that's now, in all, the s197 is a better platform to begin with. Wait for SE's and the next Cobra.

Besides, shouldn't the comparison be between the new GT to the Z28's (or if you want to go the Pontiac route, the Formula and Trans Am without the WS6 package), and leave the top dog SS for the upcoming Cobra. That is if we really want to compare our brand new, still breathing pony to the one from across town that died a couple of years ago. Besides, it's time for F-Body owners to start housing and stop racing those cars so that in 30 years we can have good examples of the Pony Car "Wars" of the late 1990's.

The ls1 is a killer engine and is a great design. Even though the Mustang has narrowed the gap, I believe the ls1 still has the edge. It is hard to overcome the additional torque provided by the approx 65 cubic inches. It is a proven performer in the quarter mile, running a little better times than what we've seen from most of the Mustangs.

And take it from me, the point at which you reach "overkill" is way above 300. I'm making over 500 now and I think I'm finally starting to get nearer the practical limit. At least on crappy stock tires with a 25 year old wet noodle chassis

Truth is, to get around, no-one needs more than a 127 bhp Honda Civic. But then, that's not really the point, is it? It's all about bragging rights and/or whether you plan to track race the car on weekends or not.
I've driven the '04 Cobra with its 390 bhp (underrated) engine and it's ferociously fast...enough that you feel your eyeballs being pressed back into your eye sockets during full acceleration. Is that too fast for the street? Yeah, probably, cause you can't make use of it without endangering yourself and others. But for the track I'm sure one wants AT LEAST that much power.
That said, I'm waiting for the 370 bhp Mach 1 late next year.

Nahhhh, I didn't pull 300 out of the air just because the GT has that. I got the GT because I like the way it's stance is with the 17x8's and wider tires.....The better exhaust note with the duals.....The lower rear fascia hiding the undercarriage a little better than the V-6.....The stiffer suspension with front/rear stabilizers.....and the fact that gas mileage was only a couple lower between city/highway than the 6.....and the $$$ value was better on the GT than the V-6.
