I saw a GTO today...
On the way to work I saw a red GTO that had a license plate from that said "GTO: PONY KILLER". Some dumb looking chick was driving it. It made me wonder, stock vs stock, IS the GTO faster than the GT?
Also, man, GTO's are dumb looking if you ask me. :notnice:

Maybe the liscense plate was what made people pay 8K more for a car thats arguably barely if any faster than the mustang. I will take a stock mustang, put 8 thousand into it and then we can divy up the performance per dollar spent.
Here is what Motor Trend had to say last year when the Mustang first came out....
In case you're wondering how the new Mustang stacks up against the GTO: The American pony is faster and nimbler than the Australian-bred goat--automatic or manual--but a retest will be in order as soon as we can get our hands on the upcoming 400-horse Pontiac.
I do know that the 400-hp version is supposed to out run the Mustang GT now, but with a few hundred dollars in mods, that can probably be fixed.

Stock for stock, it's a driver's race, despite the 100-hp and $8000 difference.

Where do you get this # from exactly? Last time i looked a fully loaded mustang GT 5 spd coupe was around 28k. With markups, even more than. A brand new 05 GTO 6.0 6 spd can be had for around 30k, and soon to be less than that when more rebates kick in to get the 05's off the lot before the 06's show up.
And every race is a driver's race. Cars don't drive themselves. 04 GTO's were pretty much on par with the mustang, but heads up, stock vs stock the 05 GTO is definitely a faster car (in a straight line anyway). Nimbleness is a different story.
Anyway, I get flack for talking up the GTO, but the only reason i do, is because people spread info that are blatantly incorrect. I don't care one way or the other and I would be happy driving either. Both cars are plenty fast and both cars are cool in that they are modern muscle cars (same can be said for the Charger), but the price argument is really innaccurate.

i just priced a 2006 stang with only the options avalible for the 2005. got a price of aprox 28k. priced a 2005 GTO, fully loaded got a price of aprox 35k. hence 7k difference. goto pontiac and fords websites and price it yourself

The goat is $34185 loaded MSRP. The stang is around $28K loaded. So that would be about $6K spread between the 2.
EXCEPT. You can get a goat at invoice relatively easy.
It's really a $3K spread.
The '05+ GTO is a 13.1-13.2 car vs 13.6-13.9 for the stang.
yes but look what u get with the mustang for the price....the GTO is just a dressed up GM with a corvette engine. not unique AT ALL.....the mustang is one in it self. no other ford looks like it. my mom (mind we own 3 fords) she said to me "Greg, this doesnt look like a ford at all"
and i responded with a laugh because we know this already. the GTO isnt a unique design. soo i give it the fact thats its faster but where was it for car of the year!?!?.....my car still turns heads....i seea GTO and im like....ohh cool a pontiac

the gto is very lame in regards to exterior design. unfortunately there is still people willing to buy it. the continuous demand for crappy cars like the gto is the reason many car makers dont strive to build something really revolutionary like the 05 mustang is. the reality is, just put a fast engine under the hood and slap on a classic badge like GTO, and people will buy it.

have you ever sat in a GTO? it's certainly not a "crappy car". stop being such a flipping homer. some of you guys are worse than the mustang haters on ls1gto.

i was talking about the exterior design. to me thats the first thing that catches me about a car, then engine and interior. but like RaGs said, the GTO is crappy and unimaginative because it was an already existant car in australia called a 'Monaro'. all they did was throw in the vette engine an slap on a GTO badge. you can drive anywhere and people arent turning heads, simply because it looks like any other pontiac. a classic is something that stands out from the crowd, something that makes even car illiterate people say, wow whats that? the old GOATS were classics. why am i so critical of this car? because the new Goat doesnt live up to its history. just another car with a memorable badge. just whoring it up for profits. im sure in 3 to 5 years the GTO line will be gone again and probably for good.
I personally love the interior of the new GTO because it is really luxurious and haven't got that plastic cheap sensation, but lets face it....it's just the interior that's special about the car. The GTO doesn't live up to it's former name esthetically speaking, and doesnt have the feel like a "newborn" piece of classic muscle car like the 05 Mustang. It's just......a Pontiac.
Might not be a crappy car, but compared to the 05 Mustang...

I'm all for power, but most people cant "see" power.
