GTO sales
Well there is at least 15 or more 05's in my little town of 34,000 people here in California and I swear everday I see another new one, with new dealer plates that I have not seen before. Man they are all over here in SoCal.
And I have seen everything from hot looking V6, fully loaded Verts, to just plain jane basic GT's to GT Verts, you name it.
Luckily though I have yet to see another 05 like mine though. Everyone seems to have a differnet color although there is a lot of WVB cars here, GT's GT Vert's, V6 basic spoiler deletes, V6 sports a few torch reds, 2 fireburst red or whatever they call that candied red (I forgot) several black GT's, a black Sport V6, 2 silver V6 basic and a silver basic GT.
The hottest car I have seen so far though was a torch red V6 Vert, with the exterior sport package and IUP with the parchment leather and some sweet staggered wheels. Looked like 17's or maybe even 18's in the front and 19's or possibly 20's in the rear. This thing looked darn hot.

A 400HP Cavalier is pretty cool though.
The UAW did object initially to the GTO being built overseas until they found out the target was 18,000 units. That is a little over 1% of the total US auto production for a year, so they gave it their blessing.
One thing I didn't mention earlier was that it was Pontiac's intent to go after the Grand touring coupe market, like the G35, BMW 3 series, etc. but also trying to bring back the muscle car. In hindsight, they should have focused on one or the other. The Monaro coupe (Aussie version of the GTO) is priced significantly higher even with the conversion factor in Australia. They do get more options than the GTO like electronic climate control, more gauges, etc. and Pontiac "trimmed down" the GTO for the American market to bring it in at the price it was. This is also why they abandoned the plan to use the Zeta chassis from Holden in Australia because the cost of the cars based on it would be too high. Obviously Pontiac goofed, live and learn.

Are you sure that's not a riced out Cavalier?

I really hate to see all the GTO bashing...

You should go over the GTO forums, they beat the crap out of the Mustang there. Might as well drive a Yugo to them.

There's plenty of numbers presented here as far as differences in production and I've even read somewhere recently that 1 out of 2 sports cars sold in the US now is a 2005 Mustang.
With that said, I'll ask my stupid question: Where are they all?!?!?
I live in Michigan (2 hours from Detroit) and the only Mustang GT's I've ever seen are from pictures posted in these forums. I've wanted to buy one since March. There's no dealer allocation in Michigan for these things. I could not even get a brochure so I bought one on eBay for $6.00.
Oddly enough, I asked a friend of mine who lives in a burb of the Motor City and they are not even present there. I am working with a local dealer and have one built in the system now for a 2006 order, but they are waiting on allocations to submit it. I may just have better luck attempting to order a space shuttle from NASA.
Long story short and to get back to the topic, I see more new GTO's and semi-exotic cars like Vipers and Ferrari's around the area than 2005 Mustang GT's. I have seen two V6's so far though.

I too live in Michigan. Exactly 156 miles from the Flat Rock Plant.
I have not seen many Mustangs either, but I am seeing more and more.
I saw 2 on the road today and 4 on a carrier. Holland area.
They are out there. People are hiding them in the stable maybe. Not me.
Here is how I see it.
The GTO is a little faster, and cost more ( except for the heavy discounts necesary to move them ), but it is plain ugly. At 400hp it should be significantly faster, but it is not.
The mustang has plenty of power and looks great and is only slightyl off the GTO performance numbers.
Bottom line you can easly add hp to the Mustang, but the GTO is always going to be ugly......

Couldn't have said it better.
I am a fan of American Muscle/pony cars no matter what make or model. I am so happy to see the US car industry start to pull their heads out.... and I am a fan of Pontiac cars (firebirds and GTOs) especially 67-69 era. Having said that I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed in the end result of the new GTO, pontiac can do so much better. Even though I dont really care for the the 04-05 GTO look - I dont think the GTO is absolutely terrible looking - its just not distinctive. Pontiac did try to dress up the 05 GTO but I think the mistake was the similarity to the grand am body style which they just cant get away from with the 05 GTO no matter how many flashy exterior parts they add to the body.
I second those who say its good there is competition for the stang. We need someone to keep Ford honest, and nothing is better than tough competition to push a company to excellence.
Bottom line though - I sure wouldnt mind having the HP and torque the GTO puts out bottled up in my stang!
