Car and Driver - Mustang beats GTO
I received the new Car and Driver magazine today. The cover story is the Mustang GT versus Pontiac GTO!
It has a really cool cover on it. I'd scan it, but my scanner is down. Anyway, to cut to the chase, Car and Driver prefers the Mustang over the GTO, even though the GTO they tested is the 05 with 400 hp and 400 lb/ft of torque. As far as speed is concerned, the GTO is faster, though. In the quarter-mile, the GTO is 13.3 @ 107mph and the Mustang is 13.8 @ 103. We need just a little more juice Ford!!

Yeah - the Stang rules! I agree with the article. The 400hp may make the GTO faster NOW (the 05 Mustang can beat an 04 GTO, is my understanding), but the Mustang beats it in every other dept. - especially styling! There's no comparison overall between them, that's why they can't give away GTO's and Mustang's are averaging only 2 hours on dealer lots! Mustang will sell in one month what GTO sold all last year!
Yep, yet again GM has a car w/ more cubic inches and HP that can post better times stock, and they still can't beat us in customer loyalty or just plain old good looks!!
As far as handling - the brakes are better in the GTO (braking 70 - 0 feet, 167 feet in GTO, 170 in Mustang). Skidpad is better for the Mustang (0.89 versus 0.88). Lane change is better in the Mustang, too (64.7 mph versus 62.9).

BTW anyone else go to the show???
The ONLY way I would even consider a GTO against the '05 Mustang would be if it was cheaper in cost.
But for about $8-10k more for a GTO?
No freakin' way. The GTO is a soul-less design with nothing but a good drivetrain in it.
The '05 Mustang has it all - heritage, design, power, handling, good looks, and most of all, charisma. When you see an '05 Mustang (V6 or V8), you just KNOW it's a Mustang.
When you see a GTO (once you finally realize it IS a GTO and not a Taurus or a Grand Prix soap-bar look alike), you think, "So THAT's a GTO? I never made the connection..."
I wouldn't care if the GTO ran 11's and the Mustang ran what it does.
The Mustang is a car I will be proud to own and others will know what it is. I don't want to own a car (re: a GTO) that I have to tell everyone, "Yeah, it really IS a GTO, can't you see the emblem?".
GTO? No go for me...

Here here!!
Seriously, I'm here (old C/T "IRS ****").

I want a bumper sticker...."Supporting the 3-link since day 1." Solid axle strength with IRS equivalent handling. Does it get any better than that? I think not.
