cruising down beltway 8 here in houston around 2 in the morning with no one around. a new neon srt 4 turbo pulled up next to me at about 80mph and started jumping ahead and letting off, i started to laugh cause i was not in the mood to race but he kept doing it, soooo . i down shifted into 3rd already doing about 85 and took her to red line and slapped it into 4th never letting off the gas and took 4th to red line. i then let off the gas and looked back and he was atleast 6 to 8 lenghts behind me. it took about 3 or 4 seconds after i let off for him to pass me needless to say he didnt want another piece of the stang after that
btw it was 2 in the morning and there was no one else on the road and its a 4 lane toll road so it was as safe as street racing could be i guess lol
just thought i would share

Yep, I got one of those little SRTs, a burnt orange one about 3 months ago. That was actually my last "race". It was from a stop though, he got me right off the line by about 1/2 a length, but I had him by 4 lengths at 1/4 mile.

Nice to hear we can beat a 4 banger turbo econobox.

there are some 4 banger turbos out there, as you well know, that would spank a stock Stang. The WRX Sti comes to mind. And the EVO Lancer. If they weren't so darn ugly, I woulda seriously considered one.

SRT4's should be taken very seriously, if that guy had any mods done to his car it would have been a different out come. They only weigh about 2600 lbs and can be made to produce over 300 hp at the wheels. Do the math. I used to have a turbo Shelby Charger that made 330 rwhp and I used to go hunting for unexpecting Mustang, Camaro and Vette owners. At 55 mph I could floor it and smoke the front wheels!!! Don't get me wrong here, I love Mustangs and would rather have a Mustang over a SRT4 any day. My point is never underestimate your opponent.

I wouldn't mind have a Lotus Esprit 4-cyl turbo=) Dead sexy in person.

But at the end of the day, it's still a neon. Not even worth the gas or risk of a ticket imo...there is one here in NV that I see almost every day coming home form work, he tries so hard to get me to stomp on it - I just laugh.

The SRT-4 is like a hot chick in a nasty dress. The hot chick (engine) really deserves better (Neon) and until they bring something worthy of that engine in terms of body style, it would never be a consideration for me.
As for the hopped up one in the Automobile mag review, any company can do that. You could still roast that thing by taking a stock '05 and spending about 5 grand. $35,000 and the coolest ride to come out of Detroit in 2 or more decades or the hot chick in the granny dress?
Pretty easy decision from my seat.

Where as the WRX and EVO are race bred street legal rally cars. Big difference.
Anything will go fast if you wave enough money over it.
