87, 89, or 93 in your GT?

What kind of gas do you guys use in yout GT? Ford says to use 87 octane. But if I put 93 in, would I be just wasting it? How's your GT perform for you with that gas you use?
I have to use 93 premium in my Cougar, and I stick 89 silver in my Jeep. I guess I won't be used to putting the cheap stuff in. LOL.

To the topic, I don't have a GT, but I have a '95 Mark VIII, and all I can run in it is premium. It knocks with anything less. I also have (by the computer, and ignoring the knocking) seen up to a 2 MPG improvement over regular. Dunno what's up with that... Timing for knock?

Your Mark VIII has the same 4v engine that mine and ford has them tuned for premium fuel. to prevent detonation at high RPM's. Dont run anything less than premium.
Now on the 4.6L GT's, ford has them tuned for 87 octane. The timing and a/f curves dont require anything more. If you run 93, you acctually could reduce the performance of your car. Probably wouldnt notice, but the timing is set for a faster burning fuel, instead of the slower burning 93.

ALso on the GT's, if you install a timing adjuster or a chip w/ advanced timing, you will be required to run premium on any advanced timing other than stock. Stock timing on a gt is 10° and anything above, will require premium. You can get away with mid-grade if you add 1-2° but anymore and I wouldnt chance it.

My Cougar is a V6 3.8L Supercharged and it only takes premium unleaded. Lots of fun that is with the higher gas prices. My mom's Navigator takes premium only also, but that's a 5.4L engine. Understandable. Using 87 is going to be such a wonderful relief, and another plus of getting my Mustang.
Thanks by the way, I'll use the 87. I wasn't sure if 93 was better for performance on the engine. I guess everyone has there opnions about it. That's messed up about the gas guzzler tax though. I guess they don't want people buying SUV's and Ferrari's. I wonder how the car companies feel about that.

reason why your cougar takes 93 is cause its forced induction.. the navi is a DOHC 5.4L which is awesome and can run in the upper RPMs very well.

-If SUV's get voided off that gas guzzler crap then so should everyother car. If you're getting a Hummer, Viper, Cobra, Vette or whatever...You know that you'll be paying out the hiney, why jack up the price? What good does that do? Sorry, just gotta female dog about it.

If your car was designed for 87 octane then that is what you should use. Higher octane should not improve performance at all. You are just waisting money by using fuel above what is listed in the specs.
Running higher octane fuel can also cause many problems for engines not designed for it. That depends on the vehicle though.

I was told from a friend (former '00 GT owner) that 93 is actually the better gas to put in for performance...and well....I don't know what to say but I believe he's right as my GT really seems to respond quite well to the high grade.
