5.0 vs ls1

Stock LS1s in the F-cars were underated, they produced around 350hp/350 ft-lbs no matter the trim.
A stock LS1 GTO, or F-body isn't really much of a challenge for an auto 5.0 or competently driven manual 5.0 - anybody who beleives otherwise is deluded.
The current 5.0 has a 70hp/40 ft-lbs advantage over any of GM's LS1 powered cars somewhat offset by the F-cars lighter weight (forget about the GTO, even the 4.6 3v was close enough in performance to make Pontiac hedge its bet with the 6.0 in later models). I'd say LS1 Corvettes as well, but I think thats a driver's race since the vette is lighter yet.
A modded vette, Goat or F-body is s a different beast altogether just like a modded Mustang.
Take it with a grain of salt.

I had a 2004 GTO 6 speed with a ls7 clutch, K&N intake and dyno tune and ran a best of 8.5@89mph in the 1/8 and by brother with his stock 2011 5.0 6speed ran a 8.6@89mph it's fairly close but LS1 is also 8-15 years old and are pretty **** quick.

I've never heard this but it is plausible with the right driver. I have a friend that had an 02 Z28 and with an exhaust and gears I saw him run 12.7s on street tires consistently. Personally I think this was a combination of his car being a factory freak, making more power than the typical car off the assembly line and also that fact that he is an incredible driver.
I'd find a hard comparison today though, how many stock LS1s were still on the streets when the new 5.0s came out? These guys should also bash the new Camaro because we have no doubt the Mustang has been crushing the Camaro in all trims this generation.

Needs to be more Astony
Technically it could happen. Drivers come in many abilities. Take for example Evan Smiths famous Fbody Camaro SS time of 12.9sec. Then take car and driver(who always runs slow times in their tests) who ran only a 13.2sec in a 2011 GT.
But this is far from the norm. Equally driven there is no LS1 powered factory car that can beat a 11+ 5.0.
Closest one would be the 2004 Corvette. But even that has a worse power to weight than the 2011 Mustang GT. 3200lbs/350hp 9.14lbs per hp. 3600lbs/412hp 8.73lbs per hp.

I don't believe my '01 Trans Am could beat a 5.0L. I just can't fathom it. I agree with an above poster that the stock '01 -'02 LS1 is actually putting out closer to 345 to 350 HP but that would not be enough.
I feel my '07 4.6L GT is very close to my LS1 which is stock and very low mileage. A 5.0L putting out 400+ HP would be no match IMO. No prejudices here with both Ford and GM in my garage. Just personal observation.

You guys are correct. Unfortunately some of the younger LS1 owners do embellish and some may not even know what a true 'stock' LS1 looks like. They have purchased high mileage modded cars for $6,000 - $7,000 and all they know is that the car is fast. Definitely annoying to folks that actually know cars. I'll stick to my opinion that I posted above. If any of you ever need to see what a true 'stock' LS1 engine looks like for comparison sake, here is a picture of mine that I just took at a local car show. I bought this car new off the showroom. The only thing different is the oil cap (the original is all black). Just ignore the show placards. Click a few times to enlarge.

Beautiful car. A friend of mine has a '94 Trans Am; I think her's is rated at 275 hp, but still very fast. Too bad its an automatic.

Everyone feels different about the type of transmission. I like having the best of both worlds. My GT/CS is a 5 speed and my T/A is an auto. When I go to Atlanta with it's constant traffic jams I like taking the T/A, or my left leg would look like the Hulk if I took the Mustang.
