2012 Boss vs. 2003 M5
Yeah this is an odd comparison but it's a very possible future challenge for garage space. My wife wants me to get the M5 over the Boss and for useful space, I want one too. Ever since I saw the e39 I fell head over heels. Such a tremendous package. It's much more car than any of the AMG sedans offer and just looks to kill. I hate to say it but anything with 8 velocity stacks just begs to be driven. It's one of the few cars that says "yes I am a very classy, bad mother f-----"
On the other hand there is the more visceral and lower weight Boss Mustang. Which only serves the M5 in performance. Neither the exterior nor interior can touch the BMW. But some of that can change. Not to mention the much lower price of repair and parts for the Mustang. I still really hear the Boss calling my name in orange or white. It suits my personality much more but I certainly like to feel more like the M5 suave. Both are common in their high revving 5L stature. Everyone knows that the M division puts magic in everything they produce. Just magic, like Harry Potter freaking magic. I don't know how it's done. But somehow the Boss seems to have found some Ford magic. I don't know where it's been but it was found. Must be stolen.
Either way if my wife still wants the e92 M3 I just don't think I can afford 2 Higher end M's. So, what's your take on it guys and gals?

I had two friends with older M's and they wept when they had to change the brakes. $$$$ it wasn't long before those M's found new homes as other items ran the $$$ up. Today, they see my Boss and they are crying again.

I respectfully disagree... The m5 looks like a 10 year old sedan to me... The BOSS looks like a timeless work of art

The E39 M5 was a badass car when it was new, and it still is a sweet car. Very well honored in the car enthusiast world, but I don't think it has anything nowadays on the Boss in any area other than practicality. The E39 M5 is still a great looking car (probably the best looking of all M5's in my opinion), but it's dated by both modern interior and exterior standards, while the Boss is fresh. That's not to say I wouldn't love to have one. Personally I don't get the whole "I'm a classy bad mother" image people get about BMW's and other European imports. I'm British and drive a supercharged Mustang so is that the same thing?
The fact that it's out of warranty is not something to take lightly despite the fact it is such a great car. BMW out of warranty = get ready to blow a lot of money every year. Everyone I know who has a BMW that's out of warranty is constantly throwing money at fixing issues. I have a friend who works for BMW as a mechanic and he just sold his E39 M5 because he couldn't afford to keep throwing money at it, and because he wanted to buy a Donzi haha. Another friend has a BMW Z4 3.0 that's out of warranty and every month or so he is fixing something on it. Just yesterday he texted me to say he just put a new radiator in. Both did all the work themselves which cut some expenses, but had they not done that I would not want to see the potential bill. The E39 M5 is fantastic car but deciding against a Boss is no contest for me. Btw, go with Orange.
This thread reminded me of the BMW Films series where they featured Clive Owen driving Madonna in an E39 M5. Awesome.

M5 is a great car and if you can turn a wrench, parts can be sourced reasonably on-line. I loved mine till the LS showed up and the only time it has been started since July was to move it out of the drive way.
Buy the Boss you can always find a used E39 M5 in Dallas!

BMW owner: like any other fine piece of machining mastery there is upkeep, it's the price you pay for the finest.
Car owner: why did that just break?
BMW owner: such fine machinery with such tight tolerances must be kept...
Car owner: *walks away...*
lol

This was more if a what if. In the back of my mind the Boss should be the obvious choice. With Recaro and Torsen of course. I think what I should do when the time comes is just tell my wife that I want the car I just come home in a CO Boss. Oh and by the way, simple repairs on the BMW are woe inducing but have you guys ever tried pricing a good set of headers? Try around $8000.
Now if only there were a way to drop the Boss about an inch without loosing the spring balance. Only time will tell.
I will say that the Boss is the last true enthusiasts pony car with the trend of magnetic ride and electronic nannies on everything. The Boss is a car that is still straight forward and doesn't throw you any surprises.

As far as the looks of the Boss, I think there are quite a few tweaks that should be made. But I still love the Boss as is. Even the parts that I would replace are replaceable and are easy bolt on/off.
I know the MT-82 appears to be an issue but I'll take my chances.

My brother had one, and yes, the M5 is a fine car, but also, it's (2003 model) soon to be a decade old car. Forget about it. If you can't afford a newer model M5, then don't get one at all.

At the rate we are going my kids won't even know what a Boss is or why it existed. It would be nice to own a true living legend. 1960's or 2000's.
