2000 V6 Mustang vs. 1979 302 V8

I have a 2000 V6 Mustang and my friend owns a 1979 V8 302 Mustang. I know that my car has 190 HP, and I am pretty sure that his only has like 140, but i may be wrong about that....

Anyway we allways argue about which car would win in a race. He allways claims that his is a V8, so he will win. I claim that I have more horsepower, I think because we couldn't find a definitave source on that, so then i will win.

If you were wondering why we don't just race them and see, his car doesn't even run right now so that isn't an option.

So we would really appreciate it if you could clear this question up for us, since we really dont know.

hmm, your V6 does have more power, but sicne its newer, it has more weight. i dont know the 1/4 mile times of a 79 foxbody tho... but i DO kno that it is lighter than your 2000.

im inclined to beleive this, stock vs stock, you should win. but if he has broken into the motor then you're going to catch a glimpse of '79 tailights :P

i say: tell him to get her up n runnin so you can see to be sure

Thanks for the reply. I think ur right, the 50 HP that I have on him should negate that extra wieght, and then some. Also, I was wondering if perhaps the newer cars are tuned better, or maybe have better technoligy than the older ones that might give me an additional edge.

Anyone else have any input on this?

Those early Fox 302s were garbage from the factory. In fact the Mustang paced the Indy 500 that year, but the heavily restricted 302 made only 140 hp and was such a dog that the car was too slow to pace the race. A lot of modifications had to be made for the car to even make it around the bankings of the track and be a succesful pace car.

Your buddy's car may have a little more torque because of the displacement advantage, but you shouldnt have much problem beating him if his car will be stock. If he makes a few mods, he can really wake up the 5.0, but otherwise you should be faster.

Yeah, both of our cars are bone stock.
However i'll be getting some mods soon, and he'll be lucky to have enough money to even get his car running.

Stock for stock you should roll him. But the argument will never end until something happens.

of course you will win... unless he is the world's fastest sprinter because thats the only way he is going over the finishing line
you have a car, he has a very large paperweight

ok update here:

My friend has started to restore his mustang and we have found out that it is actually a 1979 V8 5.0 Cobra version. I cannot find any information on whether the cobra option or version in 1979 was purly visual, or if it was actaully faster than the stock V8.

Does anyone here know anything either way about this?
Thanks

Great, thats what I thought.

Now im going to have to burst his bubble and tell him that his car has only 140 HP and that my V6 has 190, soon to be around 210.

His is VERY slow if stock, especially as old and worn down as it is by now. But if he had any cash, its cheap and easy to get the power up with a carbed 302.

Just take it to the track and get it over with. Try not to embarrass him too badly.
