Track excursions and stock brake pads

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has tried taking their Brembo brake or Track Pack Mustangs to autocross, or a road course/HPDE event on STOCK pads. If so, how did that go? Did you experience fade? Did you have enough material on the pad to get home?

If not, what pads did you use? How did they work out for you?

I have my first HPDE event coming up in a few weeks, and I just ordered Carbotech XP10 for the front, and XP8 for the rear. Fronts are supposed to be fade resistant to 1650 deg F, and rears to 1350 deg F. Plus they are ceramic/metalic compound which is supposed to be easier on the rotors, and the dust in non-corrosive. I figure they are a bit of overkill for my first HPDE event, but better safe then sorry. I was really curious to see if anyone tried doing something like this on stock pads though.

Thanks!

I did mine on stock pads and rotors on a standard GT. no issues with fade at all for me and I used the brakes and used them hard. Have plenty of life left on mine and again, no issues whatsoever for me. If you upgraded your pads you should be more than fine.

Those pads should be good for you. I highly recommend removing the dust shields and if you plan on doing more events, getting brake cooling ducts for the fronts. These cars pick up a lot of speed and take a lot of brake to slow back down. Pretty much all the Boss 302 guys use brake cooling ducts for the fronts with track pads and track fluid

Did you change out brake fluid for high temp track fluid? There are a couple good ones out there.

And to your original question, I was hanging with a guy last year who was driving his Boss with Brembo's at the track - he had a couple hundred miles on it and he was using the OEM pads. He cooked through them in about 1.5 hours of track time! They are definitely not made for a road course HPDE event! Track pads are well worth the investment.

I took my 13 track pack car to Elkhart Lake for a hooked on driving event. I ran the stock Brembo pads with 5200 miles on them. I had a total of 2-1/2 hours of track time. It was my first time on the track at speed and didn't push in the first sessions. By the end of the day I was hitting 130 on the front straight and braking pretty hard. I never felt the brakes give out but they did get hot. HOD does not encourage pushing the envelope. For a first time event the stock pads were good. As my skills improve I can see a better pad as being important.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your feedback. If my Carbotech pada come in time, I'll swap them out. If not, I may try to pick up a spare set of OE pads. Either way, I want to have something with me just in case. My car has ~2700 miles on the stock pads, and the even is in 2 weeks.

Juice, how much pads did you have left by the end of your track day at Elkhart Lake?

Good question.I have not checked them. Before the event, they had no significant wear and I was at 5700 miles.
