These are the results from the NMRA nationals over the weekend of June 10-12.
I promise to post pics of the races and car show as soon as possible Enjoy

Monster heads-up racer turnout and high humidity marked the 21st Annual NMRA Toyo Tires Ford Motorsport Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway. Ex-IHRA racer Abelbergus Kelbroom takes out Donny Walsh to win Pro 5.0.

The 21st Annual Maple Grove Toyo Tires NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals, Presented by Chapman Auto Group, is one of the most anticipated NMRA-Denso races on the 2005 schedule, and the car counts proved it. Held at historic Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pennsylvania over June 10-12, 2005, this race featured sweltering heat, sticky humidty, and just awesome “all-Ford’ racing and show action. This would serve not only as a nice race on it’s own, but it also featured the final eliminations from the rained-out US131 Michigan event.

A big-time turnout in the heads-up NMRA fields was the talk of the town: 42 Fords in Toyo Tires Open Comp, 13 DiabloSport Pro 5.0 rides, and nearly 20 BFGoodrich Drag Radial Mustangs were on the property. The NMRA All-Ford Auto Show & Shine, presented by Dallas Mustang, was a hit, with some beautifully clean Mustangs and Fords of all different years and types making a strong showing. The Best of Show award went to Fred Martin for his awesome ’67 Mustang Convertible, and Ron Smith sported his beautiful ’65 Fastback for runner up spot.

The DiabloSport Pro 5.0 car count jumped up this race with a bunch of new entries, along with a few familiar faces. New York Motorsports’ David Hance was working out a new car in Maple Grove, and Pro 5.0 legend Jeff Allebach was in Maple Grove as well with his Second Street Speed nitrous car. Allebach displayed some excellent driving skill when he managed to avoid a collision in a nail-biting near miss. New entries for ’05 include included Anthony DiSomma, Tim Essick, Ozzy Ucer, Terris Hicks, and ex-IHRA racer Abelbergus “The Wizard” Kelbroom from the island of Aruba. Champ Donnie Walsh was butting heads with the Aruba Team all weekend, stealing back the number one spot in final qualifying, and getting through the field to meet the islanders in the final. In a simply awesome neck and neck race to the stripe, Kelbroom got their first with a 6.840 at 205 mph to Walsh’s 6.842 at 201 mph.

After winning the Michigan event finals on Friday over Phil Hines, turbo guy Manny Buginga also grabbed the #1 spot for the weekend with a 7.73 at 183.7 mph. It was good for the turbos, but you could say it was a better weekend for the nitrous guys in MSD Super Street Outlaw. Points leader Manny Buginga got through Zack Posey, which gave him a bye run to meet the Sorby Brothers. Buginga spun while the opposing Fox went down the track with a clean 7.81 at 178 mph. Eventual runner-up Don Burton took out Mike Young in the second round, but unfortunately hurt the juiced powerplant sending the Sorby’s to the winner’s circle when they busted a 7.82 at 177 to Burton’s 8.93 at 113.

Kurt Gallant started off his Friday so right with a Michigan Renegade win over Mike Post. Then, in the midst of a 13-car Procharger Renegade field for the PA race, Scott Lovell and the Swillers showed up late and dethroned Brian Mitchell from the top spot when they ripped off an 8.82 at 155 mph. In the first round, Lovell went up against Jay Mingolleli and posted an 8.88 to win, but in the process hurt the motor. Zoop Zellonis beat them to meet up with the ProCharged ride of Kurt Gallant in the final, but Gallant got to the stripe first with an 8.86 to Zoop’s 8.89.

BFGoodrich Drag Radial was the class to race at NMRA Maple Grove with a 19-car field. Dave Hopper took out Chris Hemmeter in the Michigan final, and then the #1 qualifying spot went to Chip Provenza when he accelerated his silver fox to the tune of 8.42 at 163 mph. Peter Champani took down Provenza in the second round in a close race to the finish line, after which Trace Meyer trailered Peter C. in the third round with a 8.47 to Peter’s 8.70! That would setup Meyer to meet John Kolivas in the final. Kolivas defeated Meyer with a wicked 8.46 at 166 mph.

As expected, Edelbrock Hot Street continued to heat up in Maple Grove in more ways than one. 2004 number 2 in points Mike Curcio made an appearance and ran a slew of low nine-second passes despite the heat and humidity. Dan Paolini got the number one position with a 9.08 at 147.67, and he also won the Michigan race over Andy Schmidt. There were also a couple of new faces, Richard Preiser and Dan Bosley, who got a chance to go up against some of the most potent naturally aspirated Fords in the country. Booze got revenge in Maple Grove after being beaten in Michigan and took out Andy Schmidt with a 9.07, which sent him straight to the finals to meet Topolinski in the final. With a lightning-quick reaction, the SAM car busted a .007 light and continued to run a 9.08 at 145, to the champ’s 9.16 at 149 mph.

The 5.0 Mustang Real Street field was a bit light this race with class regulars Craig Baldwin and Uncle Robin Lawrence cruising Hot Rod Magazine’s Power Tour. Michigan’s finals ended up with Jay Marr winning his first ever Real Street race over Brian Meyer, who still was able to crack off a 9.77 at 138 mph for the #1 qualifying spot. Jim Breese also had his MV Performance-tuned Modular on kill judging by his high-9 second passes. Breese took down Mike Bell in the first with a 9.97, and then faced teammate Tim Matherly, who then red-lit, sending Breese to the finals to meet Brian Meyer. It was Modular versus Pushrod battle to the finish when Breese tree’d Meyer with a .079 to his .105, but the purple and yellow car of Meyer was able to pull past Breese with a 9.81 to his 10.03.

The naturally aspirated field of Tremec Pure Street had a total 9 cars including the class rivals Rich Groh and Gene Hindman. Gene Hindman grabbed the number one spot with his Centerforce-sponsored LX with a 10.46 at 128.08, also taking the Michigan victory over Brad Meadows. Teddy Weaver worked for his final-round appearance by getting through Victor Downs, and even Pure Street pro Rich Groh, only to meet Hindman in the final. Weaver was able to get out in front of the copper-colored car of Hindman with a .071 light, but it wasn’t enough to stop the charge of the Centerforce car’s second in a row e.t. of 10.50.

The K&N Factory Stock war was in full effect with a total of 12 thrashing competitors. The Modular rocket of Shawn Johnson took the number one qualifying position with an 11.60 at 117 mph, in addition to winning the Michigan eliminations over Jeff Schmell. After beating Ken Cook’s 11.98 pass with an 11.60, Johnson met Dennis Merrow in the final. Even though Merrow tree’d the red car of Johnson with a .091 light to his .201, the Modular rocket chased Merrow down with an evil 11.58 at 117 mph!

The Vortech Modular Muscle field was packed with 25 entries including Al Papitto, Vernon Purdham, Ed Hicks, Dave Lanman, Don Bowles, and Robert Hindman just to name a few. We first finished off the Michigan race, where Al Papitto defeated Michigan’s Tom Motyka. Then, Motyka’s on a mission—as he makes it through all four rounds of the PA race, taking down Francisco Reyes, Al Papitto, and Louie Manglos—to end up in the final to face Eric Swarr. Motyka reacted with a .068 and ran a 12.74 on a 12.71 index to win.

19 Detroit Locker Trucks hauled, or were hauled, to Maple Grove. Johnny Lightning debuted his wildly modified 9-second Lightning at this event, but the great driving award goes to Charlie Stanley, a JLP customer and friend who was able to control his hefty truck after a windowed block spit oil under the slicks. Just like Silver Dollar, Captain Kohlmann met his pal Mark Morales in the final round and after a brief attempt at a burndown, the purple people eater busted out a .021 light and continued to run a 10.55 on a 10.50 index, while in the other lane Morales reacted with a .017 and ran a 9.38 on a 9.25 index. This sent Kohlmann to the winner’s circle for the third time in a row, as he had already won the Michigan rain-out over Randy Henry.

In a 42-car Toyo Tires Open Comp field, John Vilardi was the quickest when he ran a 9.16 at 148.02 mph. Ben Mens was on his game this weekend, running darn near his index all the way to the finals, where he met Open Comp Veteran Bruce Parker who on Friday defeated Ben already for the Michigan event! This time, Mens reacted with a radical .003 light, and ran a 10.26 on his 10.13 dial for his first win.

Hedman Headers Wild Street was just that, wild. With over 30 entries with everything from convertibles to Fairmont wagons, it made for an interesting cruise. The King of NMRA and the overall event winner was Brad Barshinger and his ’82 Mustang who went and average of 9.54. Other winnres were: 11-second: Lance Clouser, 12-second: Elliot Martin, 13-second: Jon Bucci, 14-second: Mike Philips, and 15-second winner: Jeff Burbank.

The Superchips Bracket category had a ton of entries, starting in Pro Ford Bracket 1 where William Severn took down Jody Ames. In Super Ford Bracket 2 it was Daniel Whetstine, who beat the ’63 Falcon of Art Hand, and in Street Ford Bracket 3 Ray Goelz took out Jack Pereira. Despite the heat and humidity, NMRA’s fourth stop ended up being an awesome race. With the car counts seemingly increasing as the season marches on, the next five races should be awesome. Specifically, the DiabloSport Pro 5.0 field should be even more exciting from here on out.
