If I was an army general and my soldiers killed the enemy 5 to one I would say that was pretty good odds.
I was watching it, but I didn't know it was live. I took interest because I recognized the Boss after having just watched Speed Channel's one hour special on the Boss 302.
The Boss spent A LOT of time stuck behind two Turner Motorsports M3's (2nd and 3rd at the time), while the Rum Bum M3 (1st) just kept pulling away from the pack. Everytime the Boss would almost pass the 3rd Turner M3, the one ahead would impede the Boss's line so he could never really overtake and had to fall back.
Then the Boss went on a rampage and passed both, which was awesome to watch. The Boss closed the distance fast. But because the race is based on a set time rather than laps, the Boss caught up and got on the Rum Bum's bum bum with about 10-12 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, some douche bagels (all the way back in position, too) crashed and the yellow flag came up and they basically drove until the time expired.
I really think the Boss would have taken first had it not been the two Turner M3's holding him up. Even then, the Boss was so far up in Rum Bum's booty you could almost smell victory. The Rum Bum was in a situation where, if they had kept up the pace, fuel would have became an issue. Too bad.
I'm a F1 guy (NASCAR bores me), but I really enjoyed watching it. Keep a lookout for it if you have the Speed Channel. They usually replay these races.

i watched the race. once the boss passed auberlen he caught the M3 in 2 laps and was all over him. a late yellow sealed the win for the M3. brake fade and tire wear doomed the M3's the boss passed, at the end of the race. if you noticed the turn-in advantage the boss had, its going to be a great season for the BOSS-r.
on a side note, the AERO-portly camaro really cant compete in this series. the whale's *** aero wake it pulls lets everyone slingshot past. not having VCT hurts the camaro too.

Gonna be an interesting season, for sure!
I enjoy watching Grand Am soooo much more than NASCAR!
So I think that Dave is trying to tell us is that a bunch of $250k BMW's running Boush ECU's and custom built motors can compete with a $130k Boss 302R with a stock Boss 302 engine and a OEM ECU...... Is that right?
I'm impressed!!

You need to read the rule book and what is allowed for the cars. You mean to tell me the Boss 302 engine in the GrandAM cars are stock and not custom built? Also, the Bosch ECUs are stock for the BMW. I can assure you every team out there is using the rules to their advantage.

So why should we be impressed with the BMW's performance?
Seems like this season is the lowest Mustang car count I remember since the series started back as the Koni Challenge. Good race, but it was clear that the BMW's were faster on the oval--usually where the Mustangs tend to be a little faster. I'm guessing that either the Mustangs got some penalty weight over last season, or the BMW's got a bump in HP over last year's number.
Tough to see the Roush car crash like that, as it would have been right up there in the mix. Hope it doesn't end their season.

I have read the rule book and the BMW's use a racing Bosch ECU not the stock one. The Boss 302 engine is required to be stock. The rules require the Ford engine to be 100% stock and it is dynoed and sealed by RYR. They aren't even blue printed. Did I also mention that the Ford's the only wet sump engine out there........
So why should we be impressed with the BMW's performance?

The Ford Engine is built by Multimatic for Ford Racing, and yes the OEM ECU is used, but it is provided tuning by Multimatic for Ford Racing. Yea, its stock, from Ford Racing. The OEM Ford ECU is actually very capable as well and is very fast and powerful. The fact that the GrandAm cars can run this ECU is a testament that Ford really did make strives with this Mustang. However, you are making it sound like there is a stock tune in there for the Mustang. Also, GrandAm has bent over backwards to making the Mustang competitive. GrandAm (Frances, from Nascar) allowed the Mustang from 2005 to use the 5.0L Cammer motor and the Boss 302R motor from 2010 when neither of those engines are in production. The Boss 302 doesn't go into production until late this month or next month and the 5.0L Cammer motor has never seen production.
The M3 still must use the OEM intake system, unlike the Ford.
Both the Mustang and the M3 must use the factory exhaust manifolds. Either way they have tried to really make these cars compete with each other and it shows as the teams swap victories all the time and it makes for very exciting racing.
I am a huge Mustang fan, yes I currently own a M3, but I still love Mustangs. I defend Mustangs on other boards to include 6speedonline, M3Post as well as M3forums. Fanbois are fanbois regardless of the brand, unfortunately there are a lot of elitist on those sites. I'm really not trying to impress anyone with this thread...it was meant to start friendly bantering, a little give and take. For some reason, maybe wrongly it looks as if you got perturbed, which was not the intent.

Both the Mustang and M3 have to be at 3250lbs.

Is this the "rulebook" you guys are referring to?

On edit...from Multimatic's own press release
We have continued development of the car in areas such as engine electronics and cooling, so reliability as a whole. Grand-Am is allowing us a new final drive ratio that will use our engine revs more, but only if the electronics work.
Mark, if the FRPP supplied ECU is indeed OE, is the only thing done to it as simple as a reflash?

One other thing that isn't mentioned, is that GrandAm also allows the Mustang to run a coilover rear shock setup, once again something that isn't even close to production. GrandAm is trying to keep the Mustang competitive when it is competing with cars that are quite a bit more expensive.

Wow. The Bosch ECU is a serious piece of hardware. Anyone have an information link on the Ford ECU for comparison's sake?

Also, did you notice there is a Ford Mustang part # for the engine harness, chassis harness and ignition harness? They will all use the same ECU just with the correct harness to work in each vehicle. Awesome..
