Ford Racing Returns to NHRA Sportsman Racing with New Drag Race Mustang
In 1968, Ford took the NHRA Winternationals by storm with the Cobra Jet Mustang. Only 50 units were built and released to Ford Dealers and Ford racers, and in its first appearance, the Cobra Jet won.
Forty years after this historic event, Ford Racing is happy to announce that they are exploring the development of a new NHRA-legal race car - the 2008 Cobra Jet Mustang. Some details of this exciting program have already begun to surface, and we want to ensure you hear about it from us first.
The 2008 Ford Racing Cobra Jet Mustang (FR500CJ) will be a factory-built race car, ready for the drag strip with only minor additional prep required. While details are intentionally limited at this time, the following should help you assess the product and its appeal.
Ford Racing Part Number: M-FR500-CJ

But with only 50 being made, I doubt ANY will actually see the drag strip! Except for maybe a magazine article. They should just make it an option. That way anyone who wants one CAN GET ONE. Not only the ultra rich with more disposable income than sense.

Good news,Brad,
indeed the CJ program was planned together with a repeated modern days Lawman drag race tour as I heard some time ago from 2 sources. With Elton Al Eckstrand having passed away recently, it would be still nice to see a Lawman (S)CJ in memoriam of him and I think one can count on team members for this to happen.

Bullitts?!? Not that I'll be owning one, but come on . . . . let's put the Bullitts to rest. Throw some different wheels on the CJ!

Ford Racing tests FR500CJ "Cobra Jet" Mustang

Back in the first Ponycar era, a Ford Mustang packed with a Cobra Jet V8 was a mighty drag strip warrior. Better still was the Super Cobra Jet, augmenting the CJ's enhanced breathing with a stouter lower end. Either way, a 428-powered Mustang would tear off elapsed times in the high 13s - still fast today. Since the current Mustang is a headlong dive into nostalgia, it stands to reason that Ford's working up a new Cobra Jet and eyeing drag racing domination yet again. We have no details other than a video after the jump that shows an obviously tweaked Mustang making a quarter mile run at Milan Dragway in Michigan, but the actual car will be coming to SEMA very soon, so Ford Racing is likely making sure that nothing blows up once the package is offered for sale. We've sent in our resume for the job of drag-race test driver; shoot, you don't even have to steer!

Any idea what it's running? I mean you can get a GT with mild mods (no power adder) into the 12s. I'm guessing this thing is a blown 5.4L and I'm assuming bringing back the CJ name means it's got to be running way faster than the Roush Drag-Pak cars.
11s?
11s?
