Champion Ford Racing Press Release
Champion Ford Racing Returns from Daytona
Daytona Beach, FL (1/31/06) The Champion Ford Racing team had a tough weekend but once again showed the potential of our program. The competition was fierce with 51 entries in the GS class and rarely a car found unscathed.
After setting some very fast times in qualifying the team lined up in the middle of the field for the race. John Olsen started and did a fantastic job making up 32 positions and running as high as 15th before a mechanical problem slowed the #16 Ford Mustangs run to the front. Toward the end of John's stint a problem with the engine began to affect the cars performance costing us three seconds a lap.
“The race really was a lot of fun – our overall result definitely doesn’t reflect the speed or quality of this team,” stated Olsen. “My forth stint in a Grand Am Cup race was awesome! Although we should have started closer to the front, it was a blast marching through the field. After the second yellow flag, the car seemed to develop a miss-fire and gradually lost quite a bit of power. When I brought the car in for our second stop, it was really down on power. It’s really unfortunate for the crew – they worked really hard and the reward for them is to see the car get a good finish. We’ll be back and ready to go for VIR.”
At lap 27 the #16 Mustang rolled into pit row and Ian Lacy went behind the wheel. “After I got in I did my best to hold position and did fairly well passing some cars but we just didn't have the pace today to run with the faster GS cars and we slowly slid down the order,” stated Lacy. ”I feel a little sorry for the crew as our results don't reflect their efforts but I know that we are going to have some very strong results soon. We have two months before our next race which we plan to use to do a little testing and ensure that we arrive at Virginia ready to race at the front.”
Once again special thanks to our partners Carespring and MSC Software, and we would like to thank Arai Helmets and Mike at Sparco USA.
