Tanning lotion havocs on paint

rubbing compound isn't right for modern paint finishes. It can easily ruin them.
I typically use meguiars products. Usually heavy cut cleaner and show car glaze. These are very safe products to use and the abrasives diminish in size as they are used. There is really no worry about going through the clear coat.
I suppose the most severe job I've done with these is when someone sideswiped my parents' car when it was parked on the street. Lots of scratches and paint transfer, but just a smashed side mirror and a small crease dent. I got the paint off and most of the scratches out. What remained wasn't visible unless looking for it. Done many more minor things with them as as well.
And sun tan lotion... at one place I worked we had to put the products through a test of lotions and other stuff people put on their skin to see what the chemical attack did to paint and plastics. The chemical attack of these products could result in the plastic cracking easily.

I remember someonw was shaking a bottle of tanning oil and the cap wasnt on right. It flew off and my right door got drenched. It was at the beach too so the sand and wind did even more damage. Thankfully we had super soakers (hey its the beach during summertime haha) so i soaked the door. Still wasnt enough. Went home and used meg's polish and glaze to fix the damage. Clay bar did wonders too. This was back when i had my black 02 gt. really sucked, glad to see you got your issue fixed too

Zip Zap, no need to fret. You did NOT go through your clear coat. If you did by hand you would either be a machine or working at it for hours. You have simply removed a very thin layer of paint but that is what compounds do. What I would suggest is giving Meguiars a call or checking out Meguiarsonline.com.
If you prefer to try and correct it yourself, go grab some Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Compound. Try the UP first as you want to attempt the least aggressive method first. Apply a small amount to a foam applicator pad and work gently into your paint taking care not to apply pressure with your finger tips but your entire hand evenly. If needed, step up to the ultimate compound and then follow that with UP and then your favorite wax. What you did with the Turtle Wax Ice was hide the swirls with the silicones in the product.
Here's a video on using Meguiars by hand:

That is Mike Stoops there. If you have any questions, create an account on meguiarsonline.com and ask away. He will answer!

Well ya'll, I think i'm going to a shop to get this done. I still haven't found the way to do cuz i am scared of what the compound did. I must've missed a step after the compound. I am going to use www.autobsessions.net. They work on a lot of exotic cars, i hope i dont feel intimidated. It's a lot of money but i need it done by winter. Does any1 suggest anything or any1 in SW/W jersey?
Thanks
Thanks

If you are going to do the car by hand or with a orbital buffer, then use the Mequairs Ultimate Compound/ Polish duo, otherwise have it done by a detail shop.
