Well, the car is no longer perfect. I opened the door into a curb I did not see. I chipped off a little paint, maybe 1/8 inch, from the edge of the door. It is at the very bottom, and almost impossible to see, but I know it is there, and that really ticks me off. I guess it wasn't going to stay perfect forever.
Anyway, any advice about applying touch-up paint, such as preparation, etc. so that it will blend in as well as possible?

make sure the surface is really clean and just dab in the touch up paint (I am assuming the chipped area is now lower than the surface of the painted car), the idea here is to slowly build up the paint to be the same flush surface again, so just dab it in carefully to make sure that it doesnt run onto the rest of the non damaged door and walk away dont mess with it, wait until it dries and reaply in same manner, continue to do this until it is built back up and flush with the surface, then after you are done and have the desired look once it is completely dry then use a light rubbing compound (TR3 by 3M...I think thats what its called Id have to go down stairs and check) or even the Show Car Glaze #7 from Meguiar's works nicely to buff that area and then apply a couple of coats of Meguiars Hitech yellow wax #26 or NXT to finish...if you want to get really tricky then you could add a coat of clear coat touch up before the buffing phase but that is difficult to control and make look right on the actuall body when only touching up a small area and you are not going to wet sand it and make a whole ordeal over it. I would try this method first and if you are not happy repost and ask about wet sanding, but I do not recomend it on your baby if you never tried it before you can make it a lot worse and then have to pay for it to be fixed. Good luck

My bride accomplished the task of adding the imperfection to our Intrepid R/T right on the dealer lot the night we picked it up! She opened the door right into a light pole and dinged a chip of paint off the door edge.
Those light poles, they sneak up on you too.

It stinks more that I did it myself! I am so protective of the car..I park 10 miles away, always in spots where no one can get close, when I am going someplace I am unfamiliar with, I drive my '98 stang, etc. My girlfriend thought it was hilarious that with all the worry of other people, the first knick was self-inflicted. DOH!

Same here, I walked around planning on how I would harm the idiot that did damage to my car ----
oops.
I parked WAYYYYYYYY away, but mother nature had her own plans -- blew that buggy right into my side panel.
