Cloudy Clear Coat Under Front Bra
Help! I have been using a front bra on my 99GT during road trips since it was new with no problems. I just used it on a week trip to New Orleans where I encountered several bouts of rain and hot temps (hey, it's summer in the south). When I got home and removed the bra I saw that the clear coat had turned cloudy on the front edge of the hood. I'm sure I'm not the first guy to experience this, and now I need your help. Is it permanent? Will it wet sanding or buffing take it out or will I have to repaint the hood! I'm going to sell the 99 soon because I have an 06 GT vert on order and can't sell it like it is now. Please advise.
You can try buffing it out first, however you nailed the problem right on the head. You never want to leave a bra on after it has rained, especially on a hot day and in direct sun. There is no air circulation under that thing and when the water tries to evaporate it can damage the clearcoat. I'm not sure if wet sanding or buffing will help. Hopefully it does and hopefully the clearcoat is not cracked.
Here's a follow-up for anyone who uses a front bra on their car, especially if you have a dark colored Mustang - mine was Laser Red. I emailed Meguiars and Covercraft and both said the cloudy clear coat should come off by buffing out the hood. I went to the local PPG auto paint supply store and they suggested I try Meguiars Speed Glaze. I tried it with my random orbital buffer and after an hour of careful polishing, it all came out. The hood is as good as new and highly polished, too! A coat of Meguiars wax finished the job.
So, a word to the wise-- if you use a bra, be careful if it gets wet, especially on a hot day. It doesn't take much to cloud the clear coat and it takes a lot of elbow grease to correct the situation.
