Did you stop after hitting this animal? Did you look to see if it had tags? Honestly if pet owner wants their pet to be safe it should be kept inside, However that is by no means authorization for you to 'hit and run'. Sorry to hear about your car ...
Yea.. it didn't have tags and it was in front of a trailor park... they probably have 20 of them running around.

Well the mustang can be repaired, but some cat owner is going to miss there friend which doesnt sound like it could be repaired. Hate to say it, but a car is just a car. Yes the mustang is a nice car. But still it can be replaced. Life of cat, dog, person, cant be replaced. Sorry to hear about both.
Yea.. that's why my kitties and doggies play inside.

Well, lirathal has a point!!! You should have stopped to see if the cat had on a tag so you could get the owner to pay for the damages.

It also appears that you may have a case here. It sounds like the cat did a hit and fly. You did say the cat flew into a ditch right? There is your proof. Good luck and I would begin the investagation starting from the ditch.

I know you are all just poking fun... and I also know that some people are not cat people...

But, lets show some compassion for a life here. I have three cats, and I can tell you that if my big black female, or rag doll were to meet the front of a Mustang the damage described here is on target. both my cats are about 20 pounds... the third one, he is a skinny little guy, only 8 pounds.

Anyway, sad day in Mustang land for sure... even sadder day for that pets owner. I ALWAYS pull over and check for tags. I have never been the "hitter", but, I have been known to pick up dead cats and dogs and turn them into the humane society. What would you do if you saw a human body? You wouldnt let it just lie there...

Off my box now..
Yea we have 2 20 pounders and 2 smaller ones... I'm guessing this cat was maybe 15lbs. Now if I hit Gizmo or Teddy Bear(20+ pounders) I would expect some major damage but I was quite suprised how much damage this little one did.

I had a purebred dwarf rabbit once who we used to let run around the yard. One day I saw a feral cat ready to pounce on him from across the yard. By a stroke of luck I had a BB gun sitting right next to me. I made the cat change his mind.

Now if the dumb rabbit ran into the cat's mouth, like the cat in this case ran into the horse's mouth, I wouldn't be pissed at the cat. Cats just don't hang out in the road, they're not stupid. It was trying to do the old, "I can get across first" routine.

I've run over lots of animals in my day, frogs, a turtle (darn thing wouldn't move fast enough), had birds explode on my windshield, squirrels, mice, groundhogs, you name it. Never any domestic animals though.
In the old saturn I hit a 900 pound racoon... I was only going 25, but no damage to the car! I've also hit 2 birds with in a mile of each other... one with the antenae!

Actually, I thought we were talking about the damage to the car, and how to resolve it with the pets owner. Some believe its the right thing to do, walk up to an owner whose cat you just spread all over the road and say, "Hey did you see what your cat did to my car? Pay up buddy, its not cheap!"

Others think it might be better to just say, "I am really sorry your cat is dead, it was an accident." and leave it at that.

Assuming it was a stray, it was still a living thing.

Dont know how it is that in 20 years of driving, I have never hit a single animal... not even a possum.
Beautiful cats Jessica... I have 2 one is a new British Short hair kitten, the other a mutt. They don't go outside though. I feel bad for the poor Black kitty R.I.P., can't believe it did that much dammage!

This why my kitties have not been out of the house in ten years. One of my worst fears, is to come home, and see one of them flat as a pancake in the middle of the street.

Hmm, an indoor cat never going outside. That just does not seem natural. Look at what they are missing out on. What if a human was not allowed out to drive a Mustang. :bang:

A guy I work with took a photo I had of my cat and photoshopped her in with a pride of cheetahs. Too bad the cat that got clobbered didn't have their speed!

The crew I work with are a hoot.

Hey dude, on a serious note, I'm sorry about your car. Hope it gets mended soon!

Most indoor cats (indoor meaning that they've grown up indoors and lived their whole lives there) would not survive a week outside. I'm not even talking about ones who have been de-clawed and wouldn't be able to climb a tree or fence if a dog was after them. But, besides not being able to hunt for food and find water, they would get into some sort of trouble... or like our black friend who is the topic of this post, would get hit by a car. An indoor cat getting out is not a good thing. I'm guessing though that the black cat that got hit was an outdoor cat, like most cats are. And even if it was, and didn't have a collar, I'm sure he/she belonged to someone, or at least someone was feeding it and cared about it. Let's say nobody even knew that cat was alive until you hit it, it's still a life and has feelings like you and me. My wife is a Vet, and has been taking care/rescuing animals for 10 years. We have 6 cats and 6 dogs (not including the 5 puppies we are taking care of and finding homes for). If I ever hit a cat or a dog, I would stop no matter what. If anything, just to make sure that it wasn't suffering. That cat could have layed there for hours bleeding to death. Maybe it could have even been brought to a Vet (or if it was late- an emergency clinic) and been saved. Or at least put to sleep in a humane way and taken out of it's misery.

Sorry to hear about your car... but while insurance pays for your car to be fixed and you will get it back good as new, the cat is rotting away in a ditch.

And on another note, what's up with the member "kirby" posting 10 times in a row? And then nobody saying a thing about it? I've never ignored a user on TMS before, but he is the first on my ignore list. That's just stupid.

LOL So sensitive! I think this thread is going south. Obviously some TMS members have no sense of humor. Lighten up folks.
